it's a diff question

Hi all,
Can anybody enlighten me on a diff problem.
Are front and rear diffs on my spanish samurai interchangeable, if not why.
Also do the pumpkins from a vitara or a 413 or even a 410 fit the axles.
If the oil seal has gone does it mean the pinion bearings are knackered or could the still be ok.
I have got wedges for the rear axle to compensate for the shackle lift but don't want to fit them untill i've sorted the diff for fear of tipping more oil out.
Your advise would be gratefully received.
Cheers
Ian

Ian, as far as I'm aware the front and rear diffs are the same apart from the same fact that the half shafts on the front are 20 spline with 26 spline fitted on the rear. So if you've say a spare front, you could rebuild it with the side gears from a dead rear to fit it to the rear.
Vitara ring and pinion fit a sammy housing but I don't known about the rest of the diff, and I'm sure that 410 diff are different.
And just because the oil seal has gone doesn't mean that the bearing will be too, just depens on how long it went without oil.
If you are rebuilding I've heard good things about the solid pinion spacers RS eng sell.
Were did you get your wedges from?.
And could I have a load of pictures of your roof rack, I fancy trying to build one - unless you want to yours to me!!!!!!!

Thanks Rob, that was all very good info. which has enlightened me a bit more about my rear end.
The wedges came from LA Supatrux and were about £12.
I'll take a load of photos of my roof rack and where it fixes to the jeep over the weekend for you. It's quite a good idea and would be easy to copy once you have seen how it fixes on.
Is it any easy job to strip the diff and rebuild it. does it need shimming and all that. It's about the last part of the vehicle i haven't taken apart and repaired yet. I think i need an old one to strip to get my confidence with before doing the real one.

just been thinking, get yourself over to difflock and do a search on diff's, someone did a really good write-up on a diff strip down with pic's.
It all depens on what you are replacing within the diff as to wha you need to do - I recently installed a lockrite diff lock for a friend and I got it removed and builtup but not installed in just over an hour.

At the risk of looking stupid (nothing new there) I'm pretty sure that if you fit a front diff in a rear axle (or vise-versa) it will drive/pull in the wrong direction. :?:
As mentioned front and rear diff internals/side gears are different.
SJ410 diffs won't fit an SJ/Sammy, they are too small and have the wrong ring/pinion ratios.
Vitara diffs (internals) will fit and SJ/Sammy and are much, much lower geared :D
Q: What are "pumpkins from a vitara" :?: :)

When I had sammy axles in the zook(a long while ago now) I could interchange front and rear diffs no probs. As far as I can remember they were identical. There are 2 ratios if I remember right, both 3.something as far as I know, and then there are vitara ring+pinion at 5.something.
I do know the 410 diffs dont fit, they are too small.
If you fit vitara gears, you need a retaining ring for the diff gear pins.
