hi all.just a quick question. i have a 1993 200 tdi disco. i was just wondering if the front and rear stub axles take the same size seals. my inner seal has gone on my o/s/r and its leaking ep90 all up the inside of the tyre and wheel arch. i have a front inner seal so was wondering if they are the same...i know my wheel bearings are the same all the way round.........

if its leaking up the tyre it aint the stub axle seal

its the hub seal which is the same allround

thats the one.....inside the back end of the stub axle.........seals the ep90 into axle....

mine did that
the wheel bearing had gone causing the stub axle to move about and
seal couldnt cope
i didnt hear any noise from bearing or any vibration

ive not long changed the bearing on that hub.... i might have pinched the seal when putting it all back together  :oops:  :oops:  :oops:

when i got my disco the hub seal was leaking so i got a new one
when i stripped it the stub was damaged where the bearing sits and  i had to get a new stub aswell
also cos the stub was damaged it wore the tyre as the last person had a bearing changed and didnt check the stub for damage so do have a good look also check your brake pads for oil contamination :D

thanks mate......i did have it all aprt not that long ago. looked fine .....the seal that was in there looked ok but to be honest it could be in the wrong way round...... :oops: .... all the haynes book says is replace the seal by looking at which way round the original is...... is there right way around for it to go.

does anyone know ?

think i put mine in with flat surface facing out ie the bit with numbers
/letters on still visable when fitted in hub

it says on the seal this way round to stub axle  :lol:  should be 4785 No :s

if you have the hub face down the lip on the seal should be up facing you

just a quick question again....this might make me look alittle daft  :oops:  :lol: ......... i have the axle  to JA 032850 which looking at the break down pics hasnt got a seal inside the stub axle to seal against the drive shaft. so as fat as i can see ep90 can flow through the stub axle to the outside of the bearings..... so what stops it moving into the bearings........... its it just the seals on the bearings?

If it's the earlier non-ABS axle then the outer oil seal is what stops EP90 running into the bearings and washing them out.  If you have the old mushroom style drive meber then this is what you have, do you not notice how you always spill a drop od EP90 when doing your wheelbearings.

thanks mate. that makes scence now........ i have just found out that i also have the older rear axle in my 200 disco..... so with the second lot of parts from land rover i managed to get the job done this afternoon...... fingers crossed it wont leak this time ...... :D  :D  :D  :D

What are the differences in the parts then? I just thought it was the casings.

on the older version the stub axle doesnt have a seal onit. also on the newer axle you only have one seal ( inner ) on the bearings....

& on mine i threw that seal in the bin cos thats what helped my wheelbearings on there way

That sounds like the difference between the ABS type and non-ABS type axles, I though all 200TDI had that style of axle unless they had ABS, effectively the RRC axle (that's what they are after all) and then the 300 TDi had 24 spline setup.

Anyway I'm glad you're sorted out.  I now keep a stock of those bearings and seals in my 'cardboard box of spares' just in case.
