Very bad reception today
« on: October 08, 2006, 20:43:15 »
Three of us went green laning today (2 discos and a sj )  Started in shamley green nr cranleigh and kinda worked our way around the area for about four hours, Kept religiously to the lanes, most are officially marked to state what can pass down there, We played by all the rules,ie- pulling well over to let people pass, saying thank you ( i shall come back to that one) stopping engines for horses, passing people as slowly as poss(1st in low is kinda slow enough i would say) although a mud terrain tyre thay are a very non damaging pattern, So i think most would say we were trying to play by the rules ??

Sadly how wrong could we  have been

all we got was a barrage of snarling, bitchy comments, evil stares, and one sided arguments (from them not us) Even tried to explain the classifacation of the lane to one chapin a calm and factual way, and even pointed out to him that 100 yards back down the track there was a proper sighn staining what can go down the lane, but was having none of it - just kept up his completely wrong statement , i must admit i had to leave at that point,    From all concerned in our group the whole day was tarnished from these type of encounters, we feel like not going back there any more ( we probally go about 3-4 times a year)  But if we did that it would be another goal for that type of people

We have probally done many hundreds of miles of lanes in the past, and yes of course we have encounterd hostility in the past, but we politely listen to both sides of the discussion, thank each other for listening and carry on our way,     Ask any one that knows me i NEVER argue and only very occasoinallly swear,   Many thanks for reading RANT over for now

What was that chap's "argument" that you mentioned?  Such as what was his response when you pointed out the sign/notice?

Next time ask for his name and address so corespondense from the Rights of Way officer for the local council can be sent to him, or ask him to attend a meeting with you and the council.

May keep the dude quiet once he realises you mean business

As for winding us up for fun, NO way , I have recieved training for hostile receptions, and in no way was he winding me up , and i must not focus on him alone, there were plenty more alike

We did come across a police 110 landy, but at that moment we just exchanged knods to each other,     Off on another rant now---   What does it take to simply aknowledge some one??  just a simple knod of the head or a "ta"  "thank you" Maybe im on me own out here but even if i dont agree with something/someone i always remain civil,  On the way home we did have the discussion that if we are going to recieve that kinda welcolme/comments why shouldnt we roar round and terrorise every one?? and be rude in our responses ??   BUT  Quickly threw that idea out of the window

We met a few on the IOW, and I have to say they were no problem. the last couple we passed were trying to read the stickers and having a giggle as I pulled out of the lane. Was tempted to turn round and go say hi and thanks for not being biased.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

its a really difficult one. I generaly try to break the ice but i must admit to having lost my temper once.
A runner on a well used lane decided to call me a few choice names as he passed my window....i had stopped when he approached.
I had my kids, who were 4 and 2 at the time, in the back.
he ran a damn sight more quickly when i exited the vehicle and threatened to knock him out. It was stupid of me but i was wound up for the next hour!
you cant win them all over but i always try to be polite and give them the least chance to moan. I make sure i always have the right to be there - that should be enough to shut most of them up!
