went to get a new radiator fitted on saturday...

...resulted in diagnosing a blown head gasket.
-loss of power on way up
-oil seeping out round head
-cold water pressurised immediatley
-white/blue puffs of smoke on first key turn

so following the a-frame ball join and "them filter things" SWMBO is convinced its a heap and will be for sale once its fixed  :(

not sure what to do next, your not allowed to sell SWMBO`s on e-bay, i still have my little diesel rover which has been nsured for the next two weeks, but its not the same

as we`ve just bought our first house together money is tight, and so is SWMBO, head gasket will be £250, i gave £1900 for it, £175 for 12 mths highway robbery, filters and a ball joint at £50ish.
He restores defenders with 200TDi lumps in for around the 2k mark

yes i admit i should have bought one from him, but thats life!

200tdi transplant is £1200, i darent even try running that past SWMBO..

shes goin nuts at the £250!

Its looking like the landys up for sale following repair, aswell as the rover, and she might let me get a 200tdi (its a differant car, she`s convinced it will be better) in its place. However it may pay  off to hold back, save up for a while, and spend a bit more to get something better... not sure what, and am currently thinking about a non-turbo subaru. We will need a 4x4 in winter, as we are surrounded by country roads between home and both works (plus the fun factor) really not sure as i must admit the reliability issues are beginning to concern me, as much as i dont mind a bit of work, i dont want to have to fix something big every month.

answers/thoughts/prayers on a post please!

surely you can do the head gasket yourself? kit is about £30, and local garage etc can usually check the head for cracks for about £50.

Landys are money pits and it is hard to run them on a budget.  Really depends if the engine is sound.  If all it needs is the head gasket get it done then get it up in the air, crawl all over it and see what condition it really is in......

Hard decision Matey :(

You can pick up a reliable Disco 200 TDi with some rent for around £1150 with no mods.

Well SWMBO has had a turnaround.... says if it needs it and we can afford it, get it done..

...I didnt mention the 200TDI option!

think i`ll have a good going over of it when it gets back, way up what does and doesnt need doing.

may have a trial sale, see what fate brings!

SWMBO has our first LAndie... a 94 RRC Vogue SE. So far we've had to do:

    Gearbox rebuild
    Head Gaskets
    Transfer Box
    Swivels
    Wheel Bearings
    Disks and Brake pots
    5 years of servicing

Still to do:
    New radiator
Rear diff pan replacementNew audio system
    Cruise control
    Rear cross member
    replace upper & lower tailgate

We've stuck to it and when she's finiished we'll know everything that can go wrong... has and been fixed. Means we'll have a solid motor that's proven to keep goiong for another 12 years minimum.

Buy another one and you may end up with a nother "pig in a poke"!
