Free ones Zone Alarm and AVG do ok. I run a hardware fire wall (in router) and Symantec AV. Why, because they are booth good.

Go for AVG free edition. It is fantastic. Got to www.grisoft.com and look for AVG free edition. Dont forget to update it. Which is also free. :)

AVG free is grreat and you can set it to auto update, mine loads updates virtually every single day.

I also use zone alarms free and its never let me down yet.
Cheers, Nathan.

I would also suggest AdAware (Lavasoft) and Spybot Search and Destroy.  Both free, and between them they catch most crud.  I use them with AVG (free edition) and Router and Windows firewalls

consensus is then:
AVG for anti virus
ZoneAlarm for a firewall

AdAware and Spybot to periodically scan for spyware/adware on your machine

and its all free for home use :)
