oil leak
« on: November 03, 2006, 11:30:17 »
ESO Has sprung an oil leak ,just got back from a trip to Portsmouth, and it lost nearly three liters of oil in the five hundred mile round trip.
I think most of it was up my rear door and windscrean. (No idea how it got on the rear door).so are any of the oil leak stoppers you can get any good, have seen one on eblag and thought it might be worth a shot as I have no idea were the leak is ,and swmbo is not happy with her drive full of oil.

Three litres in 500 miles is alot, I think that instead of looking for a stop-leak product you should spend some time trying to track down the leak.

I guess because you say it has used three litres that you know it is coming from the engine!?  If it is losing so quickly you should be able to find the drips.  I am afraid its a case of get under there and have a good look.  You may find it easier if you give the engine/underside a good pressure wash first.

In my experience bodging something never pays off, to be loosing so much means theres a big problem, and i have issues with the fluids used to stop leaks, rad weld for example... many knackered water pumps and blockages soon seem to follow.

find the cause, fix and worry no more!

You will spend more time and money doing a bodge. Find and fix it.

It drops towards the floor, as you are travelling that means it gets spread further along the underside the faster you go.  Your car creates drag, or an area of low air pressure behind your car that lifts dirt etc from floor level upwards, sothe oil spots in the air coming from under your car get swirled around in the air behind you and the heavier drops get 'flung' onto your paintwork.

3l in 500 miles  I'd hate to have been following you.

Does your car have the oil cooler in the rad? if so this is a good place to start looking for a leak that has developed this quickly.  Also check for a rusty or loose sump, loose filter/drain plug etc.  i'd be well surprised if an oil sela would fail this quickly without something else causing it, but i suspect you wont see the leak without cleaning it by now.  On a plus point your car won't be going rusty too soon
