W&H Spare wheel carrier
« on: November 03, 2006, 16:05:12 »
I've finally got all the missing parts - but unfortunately W&H don't supply fitting instructions with these things. Now I'm ok with the spanners, but don't want to go drilling holes in the wrong places.

Can anyone who has one of these fitted, take some piccies for me ?

Many Thanks
Jim

I've had one for years and you can either pop up the M1 to see it or if you can wait I can try to take some photos this weekend?

When I fitted mine it came with two fitting positions, one which keeps it towards the offside or an alternative which moved it across to the centre by a few inches. I chose the center mounting as it keeps it more balanced and allows all the rear lights to be visable (8-NAS light set-up on the rear).

Litch, photos would be much appreciated - and if I still can't fathom it out, perhaps we could meet up so that I can have a real look.

I tried a 'dry' assembly on the kitchen floor (SWMBO is not impressed !), and it seems that I'm missing the long bolt that secures the stubby round bar to the door mounted bracket - another round of phone calls on Monday I guess

Having tried (unsuccessfully) to trial-fit the carrier yesterday, I dropped the supplier an email - they've put a set of fitting instructions in the post first class, and they still reckon that I've got all the necessary bolts !

PM me your postal address if you'd like a copy of the instructions, as the carriers don't normally come with them.

The saga continues........

The 'instructions' arrived, not the best bit of technical writing I've ever read, but it does prove that I am missing one bolt - apparently its in the post !

And...........the carrier is not really compatible with NAS lamps, the bottom body mount is so close to the bottom of the lamp plinth that I think its toooooo close - looks like the lamp bases will have to be moved up 1 or 2mm............

It will fit with NAS lights because that's the set-up I have.
I know I promised photos this weekend but I only remembered as I was putting the LR away this evening, I will see what they look like by flash.

Thanks Alan,

The missing bolt arrived in the post yesterday - recorded delivery, I've had really good support from the place I bought the carrier from, just a tad dissappointed with the lack of fitting instructions (don't care what people say, it not just a case of bolting the thing on !), and the missing bits...........just need some daylight to try and fit it now

Oh no it won't...................

Cos they've changed the design of the body side brackets, and the bottom one gets in the way of the NAS lamps by about 7mm - and seeing as I've drilled (to perfection I might add !) my new - yep, new take-off, only 200 road miles - tub to take the NAS lamps, so they're all perfectly in line, i'm bu&&ered if I'm going to mash it all about to make the wheel carrier fit.

Anyone want to buy a W&H / Safari-Equip swingaway spare wheel carrier, never been fitted - only suitable for non-NAS lamp equipped vehicles.

Might have to take a careful look at the Mantec carrier - think someone posted here earlier that its compatible with NAS lamps.
