Silly question....
« on: November 05, 2006, 08:48:52 »
...probably but I dont know the answer but am sure that some of you do :D

I have a Pajero and need new tyres. The tyres on there are Bridgestone 265/70 R15 and I have (from my previous vehicle) a set of Grabbers 215/75 R15.

So my question is this: Will the Grabbers fit on my Pajero? I understand that the R15 is the same so the size is right but not sure if the width (I am guessing that is what the other numbers are for) is flexible.

Am really hoping they will fit as will save me money and we all like that

Thanks guys  :D

The tyres you are looking to fit are about 5cm narrower.

You will also find that they are probably shorter, not done the maths in head.

How tyre sizes work is 215 (width of tread in mm)/ 70 (height is 70% of width) R15 Radial tyre for a 15" rim

The answer is yes they will fit the rim, but if the rims are too wide you may have a problem

Ok Thank you I thought that was probably the case. I'll check with the tyre fitter next week and keep my fingers crossed.

I know I put wider tyres on my last vehicle but wasn't sure if you put something narrower on.

Although Pajs are fitted with 215s these are normally 215/80 (standard)

265/75 x 15 is = to 31 x 10.5 x 15 which uses a wider wheel than the 215 so if you want to use the 215s you'll have to get a new rim as well

If you fit the 215 you will find that:

You loose 2" on your height/clearance
You will have less traction
Your speedo will read faster (ie 65mph reads as 70mph)
You will accelerate faster (but not that much  )
You will use more fuel
You'll be looking for a 6th and 7th gear

I've used both and found all of the above I've found the 31 x 10.5s to be the best - the speedo is more accurate, I use less fuel, and can go a bit faster (if wanted to)

Thanks Mudlark,

So really need to get new tyres that fit the rims and go back to original idea of selling spare set that have only been used once. Oh well won't have muds on for some time then as pretty strapped for cash at the mo.

Will post others on buy and sell (again)

The cheapest I managed for muds was Colway MT remoulds at around £55 a corner plus £25 for them to be fitted

I have seen then cheaper since but might have been ex VAT - shop around you never know what you may find
