Hey guys i have a old rover V8 3.5 which has carb problems....... does anyone know of a good old school carb man based around yorkshire i can bring the motor to them and wil be willing to pay cash to get it sorted.

What symptoms are you getting?

'Carb problems' can often be solved by replacing the worn out camshaft! If the engine has done much more than 100k miles and has an unknown service history, chances are the cam is suffering. It's about the only common problem with the V8 and makes setting up the carbs a nightmare.

Mine's in for a cam change at the moment.

Right yes to that question and No you need to speak to Jim Willy he will tell you about a bloke called martin dransfield I think he is a V8 old school blokey and he is not far from you I think he is over your way anyways.

Does have anyone have the number for martin Dransfield??

The problem is that the engine starts on the key but after running and stopping the engine will not start... this will happen maybe 1 out of 10 starts but alway seem to be warm.. the engine is a old 3.5 p6 and i had a electronic ignition installed 2 months ago..... but when it does it i have a spark the way i get it going is by pumping the gas pedal like hell after about 10-15 mins of pumping it slowly starts.

I would be interested in changing the engine for another v8 or maybe a tdi but i have limited mechanic knowledge and not any time to complete this.....

Jim if you read this send me a pm if Martin is interested in having a look as i am a non off roader due to this  :(

Martin is owner of LANRO in Dewsbury.  He has always done excellent work on my truck but not everybody rates him that highly but anyway ring him up 01924 430006.

Ah, is it fitted with the auto choke carbs?

Pumping the pedal shouldn't do anything with SU's or Strombergs. I would suggest that the 10-15 minute delay is allowing it to cool down so that the choke is not over richening on restart. Will it restart if you simply hold the pedal to the floor and crank it over?

it has a man choke but it does seem to start if you keep the pedal down ?

Do you get a petrol smell when it fails to start? Might be worn float needles and seats.

The fact that holding the pedal down makes it easier to start suggests it is over fuelling at the point it fails to start. If the float needles are not seating properly, it could be flooding the carb/carbs.

I take it the dashpot pistons are moving freely? Assuming SU's. Stick your finger down the throat of the carb and lift the piston right up. It will resist because of the oil (there is oil in them???) but when you let it go it should drop back with a nice clunk as it hits the bottom.

I filled them with oil about 3 months ago but i have noticed that there is hardly any oil in them, i am going to have a look at them this weekend and report back. many thanks. rob

Some models of the V8 had a temp sensor which stopped them from starting when to hot.... I know because I had a 5 day journey with one doing the same.....

Is it running over hot....is one of the questions.....
Have you got a manual fan or electric.....
If electric try running with the fans on permently if you have a overide switch. Could even be the thermostat sticking closed causing it to get very hot. Is the rad full of mud. If its got or had aircon your rad is behind the aircon rad so you may not see its full of mud.

All just Ideas for you to try...

Just cleaned the rad and now it seems to be okay maybe it was overheating a little.... who knows........

Still need to get the carbs serviced tho so will save my spending money and get it sorted. thanks guys.

Glad to hear it mate. Its very comon for V8ers to go thorugh a muddy hole and then drive home and not understand why there motor is boiling up so dont think ya stupid. Alot go to the garage and pressure wash the rad and it still boils up because its behind the air con rad and the pressure hose is just not enough when the rad is hot..... Best to do it when its cold as the mud comes off easyer...

another little thought to consider - if you've brewed up or come close to boiling the engine, the heat can greatly reduce the life of the plugs. I've just replaced mine after an irritating under load miss that made the v8 sound more like a v7 built by vw.
