Rear body crossmember
« on: November 06, 2006, 11:03:17 »
Anybody fitted one? I have just spent all weekend doing it, finally got it in , ****** tailgate won't shut. It appears to be too low and too far in.

It looks like my only option is to cut the welded hinge brackets off and pack them out.
As far as I can see I have got the x-member in right, it's as far back as it will go and mounts lined up and tight.

Is it just the Britpart x-member?  I am really p****d off , as my aching back and cut hands will testify.

If I can't sort it I'm afraid its scrap it time as I am not prepared to spend much more time on it!

Did mine the other month and it ended up slightly too high, a removal tweeking of the trim allowed it to fit just low enough, but the body work allignment isn't perefect, as if it was before

If every thing else fits and its all welded then making some new brakets (you only need 4 bits of plate with a hole drilled in each) would probably be my choice.

Thanks Chris, it's onl tacked at the moment so I will grind them off and try liberal adjustment on the body mounts and with the big mallet! Failing that I will cut off the brackets and pack them out.

It's pretty poor that the hinges aren't adjustable.  When the car was built they would have had a jig to get the hinges in the correct place (or thereabouts  ) so I'd suggest using a large peice of hardboard as a template.  Glad I read this before deciding to do mine.

I have cut off the existing hinge brackets, cut the old ones out of the old x-member and welded them on with spacers.

The original ones were about 6-7mm too far in and 5mm too low. I have welded up the bits of rusty floor in the rear corners as well.

Tailgate now opens and closes fine. Have now put the wings back on, refitted the fuel tank etc.

Just got to refit rear seats and floor after having painted the repair bits.

Gave up at midday today- and went out for a few beers and lunch with some friends!!! :D

Seems to be a lot of discrepancies between different Rangies!!
Not a job I would do again in a hurry! Hope to get it back together soon and MOT test sorted.

On the tailgate theme, there is a spring in each hinge which I think stops the gate slamming down.

They hook into the hinge somehow and the loop bit is screwed to the x-member. I can't remember how they go (its been a while!) and Haynes manual is not forthcoming!

Can anyone enlighten me please?

One end is hooked and goes in the hinge centre, the other end is straighter, not sure where it goes.
Thanks in advance.

They do indeed help with the weight of the tailgate, I'll try and have a look for you if I get as far as outside tomorrow (today has been a dead loss, I still have the flu :( )
