Immediately after initial startup I get blue smoke when I accellerate away. After about 1/2 a mile it goes completely. When I come back to the vehicle after a shopping trip of over 1/2 an hour it happens again, but not so bad & goes almost immediately. Iv'e had the head gasket & valve seals done recently. Any ideas??

If it gives a plume of smoke when you pull away from lights/junctions etc, it could be something as simple as valve stem seals

Which means a head off job, and decoke kit

A compression test on the cylinders would reveal more information before you attack it with the tools though

As already mentioned, age and mileage will give you more idea on your path

Thanks for the interest but valve seals were replaced last week professionally. It ONLY does it after startup & never on pullaway at lights etc; Mileage is 140,000. It had the head replaced 2 mths ago again professionally. (By Challenger 4X4 in Tongham, Surrey) Great blokes who really know Land Rovers.

Generaly that would indicate that oil is getting into the combustion chambers from somewhere whilst it is not running. Usually by seeping down the valve stems.

Could it be getting in through the turbo? a quick plume of smoke being generated as the motor fires it's first charge.

Would get a compression check done if not had one already since the new head.

Irregular maintainace, lack of oil changes, partially siezed pistons etc will all take their toll. So will 'hammering' the motor when cold. Whats the previous history from past owners?

We'd all like smoke free motors . . . . but hey !!! . . . these are Land Rovers  :lol:
