Tug o war?
« on: November 08, 2006, 22:54:21 »
OK so I was drunk and made a bet...

Which will win in a tug o war?

TD5 110 on 35 12.5 BFG muds or a Chevrolet Blazer 4.3 litre V6?

It'll be in a gravelly car park.

I figure the 110 has it on weight, and rubber but the Chevy has more bhp and torque.  I reckon if I can hold him for a minute or three the auto clutch will melt lol.

Low second? Difflock?

What do you reckon?

All funds bet are going to the local air ambulance as some baaa*** stole the collection tin off the bar

Sounds like an event.

Ass end on the blazer might be an issue as no wiehgt in the truck bed. should be a fairly even match but you wont kill his cluth, yours will probobly give out first, remeber, his is liquid cooled, yours isnt :)

well I'm pretty sure (hoping) he's on road tires.

I like the idea of a limited amount of fuel! ;) :D

If I lose traction and spin the wheels then it could be expensive in terms of stone chips :(

But blazers have slighty stronger axles than landrovers,& you are on oversize tyres

I would just like to mention a note of caution...

Depending upon what equipment you're using then you'll either end up breaking something,  stood still wrecking tyres or, as i'm a little concerned will be the case is ripping off a recovery point and inserting it in a spectator...

Hmm, thought I replied.

Technically :

The Chevvy doesnt have the weight in the bed, so the back end will probobly slip and slide. I would say loading it is only fair to equalise weight. Otherwise I think it will be pretty close. Your clutch will give before his, remeber his is liquid cooled, yours isnt.

Saftey Wise:

This could go wrong in so many ways, be careful with bystanders etc and put bales and other soft things either eng. Thats a lot of horses if the rope snaps. Also secure link on something damn solid and make sure nothing is on the trajectory is something tears off ir better still use a synthetic rope that wont recoil.

Its actually quite a daft idea and probobly best to find another way to settle it. Hill climbs maybe at a p&p site?

Ill bet theres gonna be mechanical carnage, and remembering that Landrover parts are only marginally stronger than their minimum requirements, Id guess its LR/bearmach thats gonna get a call for some spare 1/2 shafts.

Maybe if you weighed up the cost of new 1/2 shafts, and perhaps a diff, then looked at what you will raise for charity, Itd be cheaper to just put the money in yourself.

I recon the blazer'll walk it.

Just another thought, get MudClub members to have a gamble on the outcome. Not to win anything, but if they guess wrong they have to paypal you the money they risked . ie Id bet a quid the blazer'll win, if the Landy wins(hahaha) Ill paypal you the quid.

Is that legal/permissible?

As long as there is enough space between the spectators and the vehicles you should be ok, however flying parts could be a problem!
It may be an idea to look for a better point rather than a tow point to connect the cable to!

I there any chance you can get some video footage of the result!
If want to walk it walk it, if you want to ride it ride it just leave me alone to drive it!

m/c members could always vote/pledge for what landy bit breaks first     But the more i think about this i must admit im a tad concerned on safety issues, now dont get me wrong im bot a kill joy BUT, prevention is less harmfull than cure,

And yea why not have a human tug o war??

Hows about 4x4 owners against bobblies     ( but i guess that would damage the grass  )

These kind of challenges usually end up with someones car being damaged.

The safest (& fairest) thing to do is put road tyres on both cars and hold the 'event' on grass (no broken windows or paint chips that way).

Link the two cars with a short length of stout chain (avoid long lengths of wire or rope in case they snap). Make sure the chain is bar tight before 'the off' otherwise you'll end-up ripping the anchor points of each others cars (which could well happen anyway!). Obviously keep spectators out the way and make sure you get it on video for us!

May the strongest car win!

2x 5 tonne strops in parralel (sp?) were strong enough and despite being on tarmac - a decision based on safety, not my tire advantage! I'm happy to say it was

Do it on grass and let the grass take the damage, not the vehicles. Also more skill required, not just brute force.
