Must be the day for it...   I got one through this morning for one of the 90s.

SORNd it when we did the transfer...  hadn't twigged that we needed to re-SORN it as the new keeper....

A friend of mine had the same problem, He opted to appeal and won, Its worth a try, Suspect there are a lot of screw ups at the DVLA.

Surely the have to PROVE the vehicle is being used ON the road! I would give it a go.
If want to walk it walk it, if you want to ride it ride it just leave me alone to drive it!

write them a letter and include the proof of posting for the original sorn declaration which you sent when you should have done out and tell them what retards they are because you had sorn'd it for the period they are trying to fine you.
Worked for me :)

if you didnt get proof of posting certifcates then you should have done!. my local post office always insist you have one when sending off a DVLA letter and it helps a lot of people.

Just been looking at doing one of mine, the sorn I got doesn't have the ref number on it you have to refer to the log book for it, it seems you can do it online, the reminder tells you one way, but no ref number on the sorn, there website is ahead of their sorns, the one I have has not been altered to give you the number, so I have to dig out the paperwork for the vehicle instead,

I cant officially re apply the sorn until the 15th of the month, so I have plenty of time to get it ready, so I'll wait until then, the only thing is if i put the sorn out of sight i'll probably forget the flaming thing

Thing is you CAN'T SORN it without the log book, so I'd appeal even if you got to couort.  There are a lot of screw up with the system but they won't admit it.  We got fined this summer because we didn't SORn the Fiesta, it's a tax on ownership.  Anyway, it said on the reminder we could do it online with the ref code int eh yellow panel to the right of the form.  the panel was blank.  Had one come through for the Mondo, it said you need the ref number from the log book and the one for the noddycar has the ref number pinted on it.  Consistancy, that's what I like to see   I'll not be holding my breath then.

It's not getting taxed until it's ready for the road.  And that is quite a while off yet. ;)

They supply their counter staff with tissue to deal with all the egg on their faces.

But seriously, the DVLA has been screwing up a lot recently, they spent millions on a computer system and I think it's been programmed by the new genration of teenage couch potatoes who thing that 7 years of playing tomb raider makes them an expert in programming, so they can't sort out your tax disk but can supply you with a patch file so that you can see it naked.

Changed my plate when i changed my car they advised me to sorn my old car the same time (just incase) 3 weeks later guess what arrives.... A letter thanking me for SORNing my new car.....Had photocopies of all my documents (with dvla date stamps) I had submitted.....tried to tell me it was my fault for sorning the old car even after I told them it was their counter staff that had suggested I did it in the first place.. Think they need to standardise their proccesses.

I know this is a silly thing to say about a government department but surely logic says that if a SORN certificate is in place of a TAX disc and the tax goes with the vehicle when you sell it then why does the SORN certificate not do the same.
The logical thing is that if the vehicle is SORNed then that is for 12 months unless it is TAXed before that time.
If you buy a vehicle that is SORNed then when they send the V5 to the new owner it should either state the vehicle is TAXed or the vehicle is SORNed.
Then we all know were we stand, or would that make it so easy that Jo Public will understand it and therefore the government cannot charge him for getting it wrong???

I wish it was that easy, thing is a SORN is you sayinng "I will not be using this car on the road" and signing or whatever.  When you sell the car you are not responsible for that pledge, the new owner is.  Plus the SORN declares the vehicle will be kept off-road, well when you sell it it moves doesn't it?
Tax on the other hand is money in their pocket, so they don't care about checking up then, that's why criminals buy cars with long tax on them.

not renewing the road tax says exactly the same thing.
Having to sorn it when you do not tax it is a pointless waste of time and effort just designed to make money :(

Tax runs out then car should be assumed to be off road and you can be fined for using it on the road. what is the need for the sorn?

With the greatest of respect RRB I SORNed my Disco on the internet useing a hotmail address and never signed a thing and as for the vehicle moving you can trailer a SORNed vehicle on the road as far as you like as long as the wheels don't touch the road.
If they put another box on the transfer of ownership form that said taxed or sorned then when the new owner signs that they would be covered by the original SORN decleration.
They just want to make if more complicated to create more jobs for the boys(and girls).
