My mates wants to know if there is any way for his son to drive a 4x4 off-road under the age of 17.  He's starting grass-track next summer but someone's given him a suzuki jeep (don't get exited, it's got no floor) and he wants to play with it.

I let my 5 year old 'have a go' at Avon Dassett. Addmitedly it was only the camping field and I had control of the pedals- but he thought he was really 'froadin!

AWDC do Tyros for 14+

There may be a few sites that cater for kids biggest problem is their insurance I think Wood Park does in South Wales

Trefil on the edge of the Brecons is a disused quarry. If you ever get there you'll find kids as young as 4 or 5 driving around on quads

Isn't the old airfield at Norton still open?

I've let my 13yr old drive the Rangie along Houndkirk nr Ringinglow but I'm not entirely sure if this is still counted as public road or not. Does anyone know how the law stands on green lanes for driving ages etc? There is a bit of a mud play ground at the Fox House end.

Wouldnt that be national speedlimit as they are unclaimed/unmade roads - so, waaay faster than you'd ever wanna go!

Thanks for clearing that up, doing 60mph on green lanes would remove a bit of mud from the wheel arches!

Unfortunately I've got the relevant book packed away somewhere but I beleive the general rule of thumb is that if the public has access, then the rules of the road apply. Pay and play sites are open to the public, therefore in theory drivers need to be liscensed in tax and insured vehilces. For competitive events the rules are very different (hence kids racing go-karts, grass-trackers, triallers, bikes etc and having a ball doing so).

Campsites count as public places, so be carefull! They had big clamp downs at Billing and a lot of folk got caught out!

There may be some scope in seeking a local owner and negotiating private access to a site or field somewhere, but without the book I can't quote the relevant bits of ruling, so don't take it as gospel!

HTH
cheers

That is a grey area, if the private land/public access has only one entrance/exit then it isn't counted as a thoroughfare and different rules apply, weird but that's how it is.  Also if pay n play has an entrance fee, it's not public as such.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of the pay n play sited have under 17s driving and if so what the score is.

I have seen kids driving at Whaddon, which i think is wrong, all sort of implications arise if one of them run into you, and god forbid someone is hurt as a result, although it is a private site, im sure the old bill would have some serious things to say about it in case of injury...

I dont know how much the disclaimer would stand up in that case.

Maybe there should be some supervised underage event as some of these sites...

Cheers

If you can stand to come up into North Yorkshire, there's Tockwith Driver Centre

http://www.arks.co.uk/dir-tockwith.html

I'm fairly certain they used to offer under-17s tuition, but phone/e-mail & check

I'm about 5 mins drive from Ringinglow accross the valley. I don't get much chance to get to the pub meet - but one day perhaps.
I wouldn't mind having a go at the muddy bit at the other end of Houndkirk but you need mates with winches I think just in case, so if any of you are planning a trip out there I might be interested in tagging along for a bit of instruction etc.

We're off out on Dec 29th to North Notts, it's within an hour of you, why not tag along.  Lots of great scenery and a bit less damaging than the peaks if you're a newbe.

Will you be posting details on here?

Yes, Wood Park Off-Road most certainly does (at least last time I was there they still did it).  Well worth the money too in my opinion.

I know of one club over Standstead way who do trials and they have a junior section for anyone under the age of 18 I think it is so there are places that accomodate under 18's. Maybe of some use for you?

RRB, KORC is a good place and anyone is allowed to drive as long as they are supervised by an adult. I know that because I drive there all the time! Check out http://www/korc.co.uk
