Bonnet and Boot
« on: November 24, 2006, 23:31:31 »
Two separate problems that are making life a pain:

Rear door (i.e. the one with the spare wheel mounted on it - not the ones the kids use to get in and out) will not open from inside or out - I have taken the door card off and have pushed and pulled most of what I can see but with no result.

The bonnet will only open when on person pulls the Internal Bonnet release and  another yanks the bonnet up - not good when working on your own!

Help! (please)

rear door..... this will propably be a broken spring, do a search.

Bonnet cable has probably stretched would required replacement.
Cheers.

No, the bonnet catch is sticky of badly adjusted.  This can happenif say the bonnet has been off and not gone back in the correct place so when you pull the bonnet realease it doesn't spring clear of the catch.

Bent my bonnet on offside corner on a tree at Tong two weeks ago - so could be a contributing factor.
WIll have a look at adjusting it this am.
Thanks

Great minds and all that...

Actually have just bought some pins - does this mean you have disonnencted your pull cable? And presumably left the manual catch in place?

I fited bonnet pins recently too
I gotfed up with not being able to open the bonnet on my own.
I removed the 2 parts from the underside of the bonnet to stop them from working.
The catch (with the spring around it) and the release lever.
Works a treat now.

Rumour has it that you need the safety catch on for the MOT - any one know for sure?

mines passed it, leave the safety catch in place. All it means is that you undo the pins the bonnet pops up a little (as if you had pulled the lever) and you do the safety catch as usual. Yep removed the handle.

Unless things have changed, I don't think so if you have the rally style bonnet pins as they are very secure, however I would imagine it is a must for the cable release type.

Just dont quote me.

I wish this project would just hurry up and finish!

But I don't think it will if I keep making simple mistakes

Prise the badge out of the handle/number plate light and push the lever through hole. That is what I have to do all the time until I wd40 it,

I have bonnet pins too and no safety catch, modern bonnet pins are double locking anyway

On a RRC and I presume a Disco they have a reputyation for the bonnet to twist or if it's rusty crack in the middle above the catch anyway.

Downside is it's less secure but you can buy locking pins.

If I ever get my new bonnet sprayed I'll take the pins off, they look cack when they go rusty.

Another vote here for bonnet pins.  I noticed my bonnet twitching on the motorway and after seeing the results of another mud clubber whos bonnet opened at speed i got some bonnet pins for a few quid on ebay.  I left existing cable mech on untill the cable broke!  Its been through an mot with pins and safety catch with no complaint! Well, at least no complaint about the bonet, almost everything else was mentioned :D ;)

The bonnet catch is comprised of two plates , one that slides against the other.  Un-bolt and separate them and clean the bits of mud out from between them.  thats what stopped mine from working.  Re-grease them and put them back together.

A couple of weeks later, remove the catch completely and throw it away, then fit bonnet pins.  Thats what I did when I got fed up with cleaning the OEM catch!

I've found that prevents the catch from locking, not opening.  RRR used to unlock at the most inoportune moments.
