Tyre info from an inside source...
« on: November 28, 2006, 12:54:58 »
Just latetly the tyre fitting industry is going downhill due to the amount of smaller companies springing up and the bigger companies like A.T.S, and kwikfit carnt compete with competition. A few months back ats were very close to going bankrupt because of it. Due to this ats and kwikfit came up with an idea to change the current law of the minimum legal tread depth from 1.6mm to 3mm. This means if you get pulled by the police or take your car for an mot and you have 3mm tread or less you will get points/failed mot where as now you only need 1.6mm. At the min ats and kwikfit are pushing and pushing at the goverment to change the law and they're not goin to give up until they're sucessful (theyre trying to get it changed by jan 07) just to generate more work for themselves. At the min it looking likely that it'll change. So next time your thinking of going to kwikfit or ats for your tyres think again as they're the robbing b*****ds that are trying to scam us all out of more money

One of the reasons we have so many pre-enjoyed tyres in the UK is that the legal minimum on the continent (germany etc) is already 3mm.  You can demonstrate that when worn blow 3mm a tyre has sugnificantly less grip, it's a balance of economics and safety.

I just wish they'd intoduce some of theother rules we see on the continent, like no drivers with provisional licences unless they have a qualified instructor with them. :D

Makes sense to me, just because you passed a test years ago, doesn't mean your qualified to teach others your bad habits and out of date  knowledge.

Road safety is going to cost, better it is for training and making cars safer, than just money making speed cameras that don't educate.

I just spoke to my tyre wholesaler and he said that it was Continental Tyres that are pushing for a change. They did a lot of research with MIRA and have found a *huge* difference in tyre performance between 1.6mm and 3mm. He suggests it's only a matter of time before it comes into force.

Here's the Continantal page:
http://www.conti-online.co.uk/generator/www/uk/en/continental/portal/general/safety/3mmtread_en.html

And the Rospa one:

If you're off-roading tyre treads below 5mm are pretty useless anyway so <3mm shouldn't make any difference to us really should it

I had an off a month or so ago.The stone bridge won???

I had 4to6 mm on my tyres. The tyres were shot.No grip in the wet.

Four new tyres sorted the job.

I thought the minimum depth had been increased to 2mm some time ago... not 1.6 ?

Maybe I dreamt it  :?

Be nice to see hgv min tread depth incresed from 1mm as well,
As regards ATS etc always found that they're always on the make,
go in for 1 tyre, and suddenly your car's a death trap needing new brakes exhaust more tyres etc etc etc etc   :x  :x

I know what you mean, my sister took RRR in for a mid box (well she had blown it into peices somehow  ) and next thing I know it's had a coiple of hundred quids worth of full system on it.  I'm not having a go at her, they make a very convincing arguament but I'm not impressed.  I always go to my local guy, I might have to wait a day for the parts but he never rips me off.

I reckon that the tread limit that really needs to be changed is that for motorbikes of 5occ or under ..... the current limit is discernable tread pattern

Wait till they bring in the Max 5 yearold tyre age limit.
It'll cause chaos with low mileage classics owners.

I went to an ATS in Essex a couple of weeks ago, with a flat from our LRO 130.

And because it had an inner tube they wouldn't repair it! they said " we dont hold inner tubes any more, we only repair tubeless wheels"
