got a question here that i have no idea where to start with.

im curious about importing a car from japan and there is someone that can help me but in a msg i recieved form him about the car i was told

"Note you cant road register that car as it needs a ESVA test and there isnt a modle report for that car"

so my question is does this mean the car can never be road legal?

or is there other tests that have to be done to get it ready for the sva?

(i have asked the importer but he's in japan and takes a few days to reply so thought id ask here!)

I suspect that what is meant is that as the model you are looking at is not typew approved for the UK, an SVA test will be required to ensure that it is acceptable.

If you look at the DVLA Website you'll find some information on the SVA test and testing centres.

It might be worthwhile contacting your local centre and asking their advice. Your supplier might be wrong!

It needs to be SVA tested, which potentially could be expensive. My mate had to go through all this with his 03 Pontiac Firebird. Had to have the usual done, eg fog lights fitted, indicators changed, side markers had to be changed, headlamps had to be changes, something to do with the exhaust system and emissions and a raft of other stuff. IIRC Importing it cost a fair packet without the SVA but I think the SVA cost about £1400 in the end.

How much do you want this car and what is it?

SVA is in additon to a model report, which is a very expensive process (i'm led to believe). I was reading about it recently and will see what i can dig out.

it seems easier from Japan. They drive on the left so the lights are generally ok. The car will need a fog light as jap stuff doesnt have them but their emmisions tests are super strict so you should be ok there(thats the reason that so many older jap cars are exported- they cant make the latest jap regulations).
It does cost far more than an mot but unless it needs loads of work shouldnt be too bad.
They have a few centres around the uk....dont forget it will probably need trailering to the place from the port...more cost!

i imported my disco from Australia 2 years ago - had to change a few things on it but as a result, i found this place on Donington race course who SVA vehicles & have a good relationship with the SVA inspector.

i can try to find their name & phone number if you want - they are importers of cars from overseas and may be able to help you

This site might be of interest. Model reports are needed for every type of car imported (every model) then once this is done once the actual cars that are imported only need have an ESVA to be road legal, providing it passes.

IIRC when you import a foreign car you CAN drive it in the uk for a reasonable period before taking the SVA, provided it's safe to drive and yo intend to pay any duty that's due.

If two black cabs welded back to back can pass the SVA I'm sure yours can.

Bulli, I know what you mean about the Jap MOT and one of our number (snakelogic) is there at the moment.  As I understand it the test is that strict that many cars are not tested at 6 years old and that's why we have so many Pajeros here.  It often involves comlete brake rebuilds and exhaust systems plus any tuning to recover the 'as new' emission standards.

We think our gov't hates cars.

but at least the Jap government has a 'end of life' policy (well I think they do) where you get a guarenteed value...so I have heard - waiting to be corrected!!!!
