EGR removal on a Td5 ? - Done it !!!!!

Anyone done it, does it make a difference ?

The Disco seems to be gutless between 1000 and 2000 rpm, after that (I'm assuming cos the turbo kicks in at about 1950rpm ?) it's not too bad - it's still no rocket ship, and the auto box doesn't help much either !

I have a Dastek Power Plug (DPP), took it off the other week for the MoT, and haven't yet put it back as I wanted to get the sluggish-ness problem sorted first.

Would removing/blanking the EGR be worthwhile - and how do I do it ?

just disconect the vacume pipe and blank it off by putting a small self tapping screw in the end off the rubber pipe

Or you could just unplug it.  I blanked mine off using a coin & some silicone sealant but apparently that wasn't very worthwhile.

Look for the EGR valve next to the coolant reservoir.  There's a multiplug connected to it and a socket for another (for Japanese spec motors).  It's just between the engine and the coolant reservoir, nearish the bulkhead.

Follow the pipe off it and you'll see where it joins the air intake pipework.

Following a quick phone call to 'Secret Squirrel No1', the general view is that if the EGR is working, blanking it off will increase your NO output a chunk and worsen your fuel economy everso slightly, but will make little difference to the power output (hard data taken from calibration runs on dynos).

.....Unless, the EGR is kaputt, in which case it could be that causing some running problems.

I'm not even going to pretend I understand why!  :lol:

:?  Uh, I'm confused now. I thought that the EGR was there to help with emissions, and in doing so sapped a bit of power (don't know why I think this, read it somewhere I suppose !), and as the EGR isn't *really* needed, it (or something connecting to it) could be blanked off. Scrapiron do an 'EGR blanking kit' for Td5's, but I guess there's a cheaper version/method if only you know how.

I suppose that I should understand what the EGR does, before I go bu&&ering about with it (and before any smart-ar4e says anything, yes I know it stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation........but that's the extent of my knowledge  :roll: )

egr channels some of the exhaust gas back into the combustion chambers at low revs to ensure the emmisions are are burnt off. It also goes someway, apparently, to reducing the low rev combustion chamber temperature. Essentially, yes, it will reduce the power, but it's arguable as to whether that is noticed at the revs we are talking about.

Sounds to me like you might benifit from a perfomance chip in your ecu.

Us with older motors have mosly junked the egr and given the injectors a good dose of tweaking, that cures the slugishness. Got useable power all the way from12-1500 revs right up to 4k redline on mine . . . got some smoke as well though . . . . . but that's the price you have to pay :twisted:

Sounds reasonable to me!

I should be getting a more complete explanation later tonight so we can compare notes!

As for who sells what, lets just say there's lot of snake-oil and miss-information out there. Hopefully by asking the right questions we can clear some of the fog. Not saying any company is right, but a bit of independent and validated data can't go amiss!

I might stick the Dastek back in for now, and see if it makes any difference - it improves the top-end grunt brilliantly, 60 to 90 is much quicker than without it, but the bottom-end still lacks.

Perhaps an ECU re-map is the way to go - maybe I'll add that to my Christmas list and see what SWMBO says  :roll:

I saw that, but what's the point of it?  To my mind, taking out the EGR valve and replacing it with a bit of straight pipe would give you such a marginal increase in air flow as not to make any difference.  :?

It will increase flow, and make the intake less turbulent… will make a difference, but won’t be huge.

I can easily understand the higher emisions without EGR but as all it does is reburn unused fuel it's more of a PITA than owt else.  It can help stabilise combustion chamber temp a little but mainly over time it allows the inside of your inlet to get full of soot, that's where the penalty comes.  Bin EGR and bin the oil vapour connection and keep the inlet clean.

Fitted the 'EGR removal pipe' kit from D44 this afternoon - fairly straightforward, although I had to phone Devon to find out how to bypass the cooling system on the EGR pipe (its seems the later Td5 EGR systems have an extra modulator, and the exhaust manifold to EGR valve pipe is water cooled). Took about 45 mins in total, glad I did it with a cold engine as it would have been a little uncomfortable getting my fingers that close to a roasting lump !

And the difference...............pretty impressive, better pick up at low revs and less 'hunting' when idling. The EGR valve that I took off was fairly well cacked up with oily, sooty clag - a bit hard to check if it was working properly as I need a vacuum source. I've left the pipe cooler in situ, so the coolant will continue to circulate around it, and the modulators are still there, just removed the vacuum feed (there's in a T piece in the vacuum pump to brake servo line), and blanked off the spare bit of the 'T' (the blank is supplied in the D44 kit.

I'm going to run it like this for a while, and then stick the Dastek back on.

Been driving around without the EGR for a few days now - it's definitely made a difference, bottom end grunt is much improved, and although I can't be certain, there seems to be less muck coming out the exhaust when giving it the boot !

Probably the best £50 I've spent in a long while  :D
