DVLA what a bunch of *****NOT VERY NICE PEOPLE*****
« on: December 05, 2006, 17:18:50 »
Just been trying to get road tax today - no joy

Now I know when I didn't receive the V5 after 6 weeks I should have contacted the DVLA to remind them to do their job, but I just forgot OK?

Taxed the Jeep no problem 6 months ago with the green slip, went to Post Office to get tax. 'Oh no, we cant do that here, its out of date - you must go to DVLA local office' -  luckily not too far away.

'No,you cant tax the vehicle its not in your name' they say. 'But, I have all the documents here' I say. 'Its not in your name - you cant tax it'
'But, the cars in the car park, I need to tax it' I complain.

'You cant tax it until you have V5  - and by the way you shouldn't drive it without a disc, you should get the V5 in 2/3 weeks, goodbye'

So,I try and do the right thing, and the system wont let me - I now have to break the law if I need to drive the Jeep

What a complete bunch of *****NOT VERY NICE PEOPLE*****

Ok, if you tax it before the ned of the month all you can be done for is failure to display, though the fine is a biggy.  My local office is very variable.  I say get the V5 off ASAP as they are taking a week or so at the moment.

here is one for you.  road traffic act of 1988 and 200 says its illegal to not own a tax disc but not illegal if you dont display it.  i used to ride a motor bike and i kept having it knicked so i put it in me pocket and i never got bothered with it.

I don't want to be pain on this one, but it is still an offence 'not to display' the VEL disc, and you can get fined a heavy amount on the spot. It always used to be that the person who was failing to display would get reported to the DVLA, but now the Police have been authorised to give out Fixed Penalty Notices.

It IS illeagal not to display a tax disc but you'll find that most police officers understand the issue of bikers having theirs stolen...so let you get away with not displaying so long as the vehicle is taxed...
Hit it till it breaks then hit it some more !

karlo, you need the document reference number which is unique to each vehicle and owner at the time, so he would have to wait for the V5 to come still even to do it that way.

How about this -

The bloke at the local DVLA office said I have 14 days grace as long as I bought the tax disc before.

So, if I get pulled, Steve from Bournemouth DVLA office will be blamed

Doesnt work like that :)

You may well get issued with a fine automatically too regardless of you driving it or not.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.
