Having problems selecting reverse - any ideas ?
« on: December 06, 2006, 19:41:50 »
This month i have been mostly struggling to get it into reverse. There doesnt seem to be the usual spring to overcome before it goes in reverse - i just have to guess.

All the other gears are spot on - any ideas ?

Thanks

Ringo

Thanks Danny - i will have a go at that. Do i get to the top housing by lifting up the gator jobbie in the cab ?

Oil level is fine - changed it on Saturday - but it was definitely full before i drained it.

Thanks

hang on was thinking about my disco box
yours will be a def lt77 or r380 long stick
now usualy with them, the ally casing that the 2 torsion springs sit on wares as happend to me when i had a 90 gearbox
which gave a p*** poor gearstick that was more sloppy than a series 1
was impossable to change gear and was no gateway between 1st and reverse
changed the ally casing and was fine after that
but to inspect
remove the gear nobs
then remove the gater over
you will no be able to see the top of gearbox
remove the gearstick IIRC its 1 m10 bolt 17mm head
then take off the gearstick
and then your just left with a annoying rubber cover over the casing to remove,  prise that off and youll now be looking at the gear selector and torsion springs
be prepared for a shock tho    mine was worn right down to the mounting bolts    and was ritten off as by me

Well, the problem got better - then worse, then so unpredictable that last weekend i finally had to do something about it.

I took off the gators and unscrewed the transmission tunnel for easy access.

I took off the aluminium casing that holds the ball and could easily tell that it was the reversing plunger that was at fault. It was not retracting at all as the ball bearing was stuck. I removed this plunger mechanism took it to bits. I found that the ball bearing in this was ever so slightly pitted. A quick polish and a bit of grease and now its back together and working.

I would have liked to have got a new ball bearing - but i couldnt wait 3 days for it to turn up. I will get one ordered and change it if it ever happens again.

Sigh of relief - the gearbox isn't knackered!

my 90 currently has neither the spring or ball bearing in as mine was a bit tight so i serviced it but the BB erm well rolled away down the drain    its not too bad without one tho will just have to buy another some time...
if you you can make it i can break it.
