Hydraulic winch

I know of a hydraulic winch that will be sold next year sometime and it is in good working order and will come with all the bits like valves, bumper etc etc.

My main question is is it easy to fit a hydraulic winch to an auto disco? I am not technicaly minded so please dont post saying yeah you do this this this and this as I wont know what your on about

Will it be possible to run it off the gear box as well as being able to drive at the same time?

Your thoughts will be appreciated before I se how my funds are to treating myself to a winch. I have heard that hydraulic ones are far more reliable than electric ones and will work for hours and hours with no worries.

BTW it is coming off a defender 130 (longer defender than a 110 anyway) so I know winch bumper will be useless but can sell it on eblag or on here and buy another 1.

Its an easy job if the unit is made for your transfer box.........i have a seperate ZF74 pump on mine that fits where the AC unit used to be........As for been able to drive while winching YES you can.......you have 2 options........drive......winch or both all done via the transfer box.
You will need to check what box it is coming off as to weather it will fit yours.

3 schools of thought.
1 run the winch from the PAS, not my favourite and not too hot with some insurance either
2 fit second PAS pump to the engine and use that
3 run a PTO pump on the back of the box

option 3 is usually the most powerful and also the most expensive

Surely the front ends are the same so the bumper should fit - unless it's a rear one of course.

Your best bet is to take pics of all the parts before is is taken off the donor vehicle so you have something to refer to when you fit it to yours.

Essential bits besides the winch are the valve, tank, and pump - not forgetting the pipework of course

Powersteering pump! forget it if you want the winches true potentiol use a dedicated pump

I will try and take photos if I go ahead with it. How much are we talking for different pumps? Could I run a pump from where the a/c unit is mounted?

  I WOULD GO FOR ELECTRIC, AS ALOT SIMPLER AND THAT IS ONE BIG HEAVY WINCH MATE AND COST FAIR AMOUNT TO DO IN TIME/BITS

I was wondering about the weight but with new suspension I was hoping that would take it. So a leccy winch looks alot easier to do etc etc. I have an old small battery off my rover I could use and do a split charge system in it to charge both batteries. I have no idea how to install a leccy winch though etc etc.  

will post a cheque to you ASAP.

why hydraulic ?
your getting way to complexed and heavy now for occasional use and for pay and break days
get a nice little leccy number its alot simpler and lighter
as for wireing up theres pleanty of us on here who can help, or drop me a pm and ill be more than willing to help
as for batteries, dont bother with coplexed split chargers that fail  :roll:
fit a 100a alternator then get 2 of the same batteries and like them together
fitting a hydraulic is complexed and all the people are giving you thoughts in the head now about how to do it  
fitting to pas pump, dont bother, new pump everytime you use it
fitting a zf pump where a/c goes gives reasonable results
but to get the optimum out of the winch a dedicated pump right of the arse end of the transfere box is the best way,but its so expensive, by time you finished getting it all set up and done, you'll be away with a leccy winch rigged with plasma still with money in your pocket

but hey thats my opinion  :roll:

just one thing,you can run a pump of the crank pully via a chain drive & this allows u to drive assist,still expensive though,

yea mike ano about them chains of cranks, but ive seen a few get spat of, afink they home made jobs and they aint thought bout deep mud
