Soon be warm!
« on: December 20, 2006, 13:42:19 »
Well after moving into my canal boat in september I can safly say it is COLD. But that is soon to change with the installation of a nice new cast iron stove! Although there is gas central heating it eats the gas so quickly! the stove is a Morso squirrel which im told is one of the best makes. It is being installed by middlesex and herts boatyard where I am moored, yesterday the stove was mounted on to the specially fabricated harth, which looks amazing, they have done a fantastic job and the welding on it is superb. hopefully by the end of the week the chimney will be fabricated and they will have had a little play with the plasma cutter on the roof to cut the hole! so should have a nice toasty stove in time for christmas
Regards James

I hope for your sake it is fitted by then, boats make the cold seem even worse, especially when damp (which your shouldnt be!) - must be all the water underneath sucking out the warmth 24/7.

Don't just use steel tube for the chimney. You'll need vitreous enamel flue at the very least. The amount of heat generated is huge. And make sure the stove has plenty of clearance from anything combustable. You really need 18" clearance unless you use fireboard or similar.

If you need any advice, call my wife. She'll give you all the detail you need to do a safe installation. PM me if you'ld like her contact number. She sells stoves on a huge scale. Like she buys them 2 container loads at a time!! She spent over £100,000 in one order recently

I am seriously envious of you. I have seen my idealboat to live on. An old WW2 torpedo boat, moored on the River Hamble. Very nice!
Have a nice nautical Christmas! Make good use of the rum!

Know the one you mean. The old turbines have unfortunately been stripped out though :) Was up for sale for ages.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

got a heron stove in mine, you can get it that hot its unbearable. i'm still trying to get it so it runs right through the night though. we on the gu leicester line, have you got a carbon manoxide alarm, would advise one , not part of the boat safety but really a good idea. alan.....

yep the squirrel is the one you want, mine can heat most of a 3 bedroom house

how do you find it living in a boat, i was looking into it but the cost of mooring near where i live was about the same as getting a mortgage

living on the boat is great, i moved into the boat because it was much cheaper than a house. the mooring is about £4500 a year so not too bad! the only downside to living on the boat is the cold but by this afternoon that should all change by the sounds of it! :D

I looked at boats before buying my house, but the lack of cheap moorings with parking kinda put me off.
Also, my mortage costs £5500 ish a year and I'm now in a bigger house than i need which makes your mooring costs seem an awful lot of money!
