Ha, its really not as rosey as it seems, i hate my job (self employed), i make a pittance 10 months of the year and a smidge more than a pittance the other 2, but it certainly doesnt make it worth while. I'm desperately trying to get back to engineering where i started out and it looks like i will have to "re-train" and earn 10K training salery for a few years whilst i do....

Not everything is as it seems!

P.S - I was 24 when i bought it  :P

toyed with the idea of setting up on my own about 15 years ago doing mobile valeting- then got fobbed off by every bank possible for about 8 months - in the end I settled for the mundane job of HGV driving - but at least I have my paypacket every wek, and I can leave work at work!

I got fobbed off quite a few times by bank managers

On one occasion I remember quite well the 'so called business manager' told me the idea I had, a rental business, would not work as the items I was proposing to rent "would never take off"

This was back in the early 80s and the business was video rental

Don't get me started on banks! As was said they have stiffled so much potential. Why anyone thinks a jobsworth employed by a bank has any idea what it's like to start and run a business is beyond me.

Look at the way banks are run, they just make the rules up as they go along and dip into your cash as and when they want to with spurious charges etc.

Then we are meant to think 'I need some sound advice about my innovative idea, I'll pop along and see my bank!'

The best advice I got was when I started as self employed 20 odd years ago was from a disgruntled bank manager whose branch was being closed - don't borrow money from a bank! Basically he said avoid debt like the plague especially borrowing from a bank who will ALWAYS want your house as surety.

I added to that - never employ staff if you can humanly avoid it! BTDT and it wasn't pretty - my fault I accept but still not much fun and now far worse with all the 'rights' employees have that just make it ever harder for a small business to turn in a profit.

And if you don't enjoy your self employed work well move on! You're in control - reinvent yourself!

Well, I'm back at work so I'm not bored.... which conveniently links to another comment in this thread......

If you do get the chance to work for yourself, go for it. It's fair to say that it's not for everyone. But if you don't mind living on the breadline for a few years and working all the hours under the sun (and most of them under the moon too!) you will not regret it. I don't think I could ever work for someone else again. Or at least, I would find it very difficult. We have now been in business for 13 years and I'm earning more than I was at Lotus as a design engineer. It's taken a long time, but I wouldn't change it.

I am 41.
I have my own business and also work full time and am a partner in another business.
I own everything I have, but it`s not much, to some it would be much but to many it would be nothing.

I don`t buy flash motors anymore and I just pulled out of the purchase on a large property in the country............I have realised that we don`t need it.
I am content to dress as a loser/tramp and have a large bank balance and everyone see me as not having much :D

My money gives me freedom, knowing that I could chuck it all in tomorrow gives you a nice warm feeling and means that you don`t have to tow anybody`s line other than your own.

I destest consumerism on all levels and see it as a weakness in the human species.

I also hate giving money to the taxman, another reason for not buying a larger property.

I am looking for a nice place to retire where people are prepared to pass the time of day and all things that you need are a reasonable price.
The earlier I retire, the longer my life will be.

Life is about living it the way you want to, and I know how I want to live it.

Not everyone would want to live the way you choose to, but that last sentence sums it up perfectly.

Oh and the bit about paying the tax man will probably apply to everyone!!
