Folks!
I wish to throw this one open to all of you.
I am considering going to Italy next year at the end of June with her Ladyship and we are taking the tent.
Can anyone help with answers for the following questions?
1) Any special mods needed for the Disco?
2)Does anyone have experience of good/bad camp sites?
3) Does anyone have contacts with 4x4 clubs in Italy
4) Does anyone want anything brought back? (illegal immigrants, drugs, guns, mafia contacts, etc etc will not be considered)

Cheers Darlings! Have a good New Year!

Italy, make sure everything is secure, they are theiving bar steawards.
The south is hot and very untidy, the North is very classy and expensive.
The people on the whole, the ones who do not entirely love themselves, are a nice bunch.
The drivers are complete lunatics, only death stops them.

Food was great, beer was adequate, wine was better.

They have ruined their Roman treasures in the name of tourism and profit.

Lot`s of African immigrants in the tourist areas at the mo`......They are worse than the Mafia.

Apart from that, it is a great place to go.

Sorry LSP, I can't answer any questions, just enjoy yourself.

Bez!
get yourself a proper MINI (not one of the crap BMW versions) and do the Italian Job Charity Run.
Failing that, get the book 'The Making of The Italian Job, by Matthew Field.
Done the IJ run twice, in 94 & 95. Absoulutely amazing!
As for the Duke 999. Could be a problem there, Old Mate. Am taking Lady Shagg-Pyle and the daughter, Baroness S-P as well. Not much room in the back of the Disco, once we have piled it it up with olive oil, salamis, wine and gorgonzola!
I want to go to Rome, Naples and Venice, but will the Disco make it? She is on 191,000 miles already!

Naples is an awful place, much better to go to Pisa.

Naples really is a romantic notion that is long forgotten, however, that said, we are all different and we have to find out for ourselves, I am but a simple human with one veiw. :D

Pisa! What a dump, having been once I would never go again and would suggest if you're in that area then make a brief early morning visit to the Campo thingy for the tower and then spend real time in Lucca which is gorgeous! Of course there's Florence as well.

Venice was great too but no good for driving! We went out of season and it was a real delight.

I was told by some guys in the Malta AWDC that the Italian cops are red hot on tyres and only permit sizes that can be bought as standard fitment. I'm not sure if they can do that to you as a visitor but these guys got regular hassle when they went to Italy in their off roaders.

Best thing you can do is load up the Disco for the return journey, hand the keys to her ladyship, climb into your leathers, insert head into skid lid, tell the Baroness you will have the kettle on when she gets home, mount up on the Duke 999/1098, wave lovingly and you can be home in 24 hours.
It would take 6 months for the smile to fade.

If you go to Naples fit scaffold bars all around the Disco, forget underbody protection it's body protection you need.
Naples is a Dump but good for ferry's to Capri, worth it if only a day trip; Sorento along the coast is a much nicer place.
Stop in Venice; one of those thiongs you have to do, a day is enough, after that you need a mortgage. Last time I was there a hour in a Gondala was 200 Euros.
Piza is worht a vist to see the tower, being in Tuscany that is no hardship as there are a lot of very good Vineyards.

What is it about Italy that everything they are famous for is a 'mess' up? Venice is sinking, Pompey got destroyed, Naples and Rome are falling apart and the the clock tower at Piza is falling over. Is this what inspired Fiat?

Oh yes, and if the ferry is not to much a trip to scissily is worthwhile to go and look at Etna.

Some of the best offroading is in Sicily. So drive to Naples (should take 2 days) then get the overnight ferry to Sicily. Once out of the towns the scenery and offroad potential is great.

Pompei was wonderful, I stayed in the hotel next door to the entrance to the old city, they even had a nice secure place out of sight for the bike.

Spent all day mooching around the ruins, not really ruined, but a little worn. The history is amazing and the paint on the walls that is 2000 years old is just unbeleivable.

Rome is bedlam, I couldn`t imagine it in a car, Florence is the same.

We met some really nice people in rural hotels, don`t like big flash hotels, so impersonal.....Campsites are better though in every country.....You meet real people on campsites :D

If I can be of any help, I live in Tuscany, a place called Viareggio, just NW of Pisa. There are some great places here and a large offroad community. There is a very good club and the natives are very friendly and helpful. The language is not a problem, they all want seem to want to show off their English skills. Here is a good link  http://info@offroadclubversilia.it
Hi people, I am an Englishman now living in Italy. There is a huge offroad community here and loads of events should anyone want to venture south for a change of scenery.

Sorry I have been to 3 different parts of Italy but couldnt understand why people rave on about it, Amalfi coast is nice but Pizza, Rome, and Napals not as good as i thought, Rome is full of beggers I would only go if you wanted to see all the church type attractions, if you do walk its quicker than driving
Pizza is a small town with a church and a wobbly tower no que to go in it though due to the admission price
Napels is a bit tumble down.
Your best bet is to take Sinbads very kind offer, locals always know the best places.
Remember it will come in handy even if you never use it
