stub axle

i think ive broken my stub axle on my 1990 200tdi.
its the front drivers side.

driving along and thud, lost drive to wheels, and when i looked wheel was leaning in at top.
do i need to replace the whole unit that can be unbolted from behind the swivel housing with 6 bolts?

would bits from a 300 series fit?

does anybody have bits or i donor car?

any help would be appreciated.

to remove the stub axle take the hub off, thenyou will see 6 nuts holding the stub axle on, are you sure its the stub axle

using the limited knowledge i have and a workshop manual, i think so.
taken off the wheel and the centre cap covering the wheel bearing etc,
the shaft that has a nut threaded onto it there is sheared off,
the car would not move unless diff lock was engaged, can anyone explain this?

Gee,

You can buy new stub axles quite cheaply from Paddocks.
You have engaged the diff lock which simply put allows you to lock either front or rear axle. The broken stub axle was the line of least resistance so all power would have gone to that wheel hence no drive. YOU SHOULD NOT drive at all with this kind of problem. Locking the center diff could have caused you loads more problems.

If you need a hand let me know you arent a million miles away.

At the cost from paddocs there is no point using old parts as they are never as good.

If it was moving or has moved since it snapped you need to check the half shaft and CV very carefully as it could have been mashed, the CV is supported by the stub axle and depending on the type also by the bearing in the end of the axle casing, it's not strong enough to hold the wheel on though :(

bulli mate the stub axle alone for mine is £85 + vat and i do think theres a strong possibility im gonna need more parts.

the easiest think to do i think would be to replace the whole lot.

rrb, the car was driven home about a mile, at very slow speed.
looks like it may have done more than i thought at first.

hasnt anyone in the ncgl got anything. I did have but sold the lot to DiscoDJ

just fit what ever ones cheapest,the only thing non interchangeable about the stub axles is between 24 & 10 spline shafts

even a defender or RRC fits

There's a whole axle for sale on the AWDC web site at 120 quid if recollect correctly.

I have spares for the 200's both sides i think..........its a bit of a treck tho..........had the rear on my disco go at 55mph.......not nice.........ground the shocker mount off the axle so had to change the full axle.

That's the place to start I think, see what's busted and write a shopping list.

I have a few bits lying around but I don't think I have many spares that you could use.

Not unless you want to convert your front end to Defender 200TDi that is, I tried but the CV sticks through the middle of my alloys and the flange is also wrong for alloys.

cheaper and easier to buy another complete axle secondhand for 50 / 60 pounds, theres loads about, ive just DUMPED 2 as in the way.
