The only drastic problem we have encountered (on our 3rd VM in 2 RRC) is with over heating. If you warp the cylinder heads beyond skimming then the engine is pretty much a right off as new cylinder heads are around £250 each  .To cook a VM though involved firstly a blocked radiator thanks to a void between the main and aircon radiators being cock full with leaves after 12 years. This was followed by towing modile grain driers up hill and down dale on hot days. The final nail in the coffin was turning the engine off to put more water in via the radiator the moment we came to a stop in a services. The current engine has servived potential over heating. driving back from wales with a totaly blocked radiator and no temp guage, the first I knew about it was the low water level light. Avoiding the mistake of last time I let the engine idal for some time before removing the pressure cap to fill up and left the engine running all the time. (learning from my fathers mistakes)The turbo lag can be a pain and the low end torque could do with improving, come to thing of it the vibration a idal is not good, but apart for than the VM gives little cause for conceren.
