wiring a winch on a defender
« on: January 01, 2007, 17:29:11 »
Haven't got a winch but thinking of getting one sometime in the spring.
Has anyone got any pics or diagrams of the wiring. Would like to see how it goes together under the bonet and through to under the seat. Is it an easy job?

Cheers
Leigh

its dead simple, landrover even give you a big enough hole in the seat box to run the poer cables through, when i get home tommorow if i remember ill try n get some pics of my setup, have a single BIG battery running through an isolater to the Albrite solenoids mounted up on the wing then down to the winch (keeps the solenoids up out the crap & easy to work on) have the 2 power cables & the 3rd 1 for the motor windings & i run the earth from the winch motor straight back to the -Ve Terminal on the battery, not onto the chassis as this can give poor performance

You could slice the power cables and fit a pair of andersone conecters just out of site and then make your jump leads to suit so that you can have a jumping point far more easily located right at the front of your motor.
if you you can make it i can break it.

nah
not a good place really
there good, but still corrode
they will start to give problems
andersons need to stay in the cab really in the dry, well most of the time
get the winch then give us a bell the and well help you out with suggestiong ect ect
but get a decent battery isolator as you dont want the winch to be powered up constantly

I disagree, if they have a good coating of vaseline internally    and you use sealing caps they are not that bad at all.

I do know what you are saying but the winch will be cencted most of the time so the anderson 'pins' wont be open to the elements thus reducing the corrosion able to take place.
if you you can make it i can break it.

To be honest I haven't decided on what winch yet. Too much choice and to many opinions. The warn 9.5xp is a favourite at the moment. Thanks Dave, it wont be until I've recovered from the christmas expense but would be great to pop round and take a look.
So what are the benefits of an anderson connector? An isolator switch sound like good sense.
Thanks
Leigh

well i have car seats in my 90 which makes acsee impossible due to 8 m6 bolts but i will be installing an anderson connecter to the battery box to take my jump leads just like this setup X-jump only cheaper if you build it yourself, but we also have a 130 and trying to jump anything off that is a total PITA because of its length when you cant get side to side with the motor your trying to jump, so if you install an anderson connecter to your winch cables say just inside the engine bay or on your bumper then using a set of anderson equiped jump leads you will have far more reach with them and not have to take the passenger set out to jump start anything else and not be shi**ing yourself about arcing you leads out on the seatbox(well maybe thats just me but i'm a big sissy when it comes to batterys  )  well thats my idea anyway.
if you you can make it i can break it.

Yep agree with you Muddy, got andersons front and rear of my 130 for jump leads makes it a whole lot easier a coat of vaseline at every vehicle service and the proper dust covers they last forever, well mine have been going 10 years

I have fitted a winch to my 110, I have not any pics at the moment but one thing that I did as a modification following a trip to the croisiere blanche in france is to mount the winch relay and Solenoids under the bonet on the inner ledge of the passenger side wing. Initially I had them out side at the front with the winch but in cold weather they will work a lot more efficiently when kept hot in the engine bay.
