Engine Oil
« on: January 02, 2007, 21:39:20 »
Hi,

Having to do the engine oil twice a year (every 6 months) in my Defender 200Tdi and G/f's Disco 300Tdi which is probably about 30L (give or take) of oil a year with top ups.  it gets pretty expensive for oil, well at halfrauds prices it does!!

But the girlfriends dad works at a hydraulics place and can get me 15/40 oil in a 25L tub at trade price for £21 a tub (labled as their own.)  (they sell it to public for £40 a tub)

On the tub it says, Fleet engine oil 15/40 for NA Diesel engines, turbo Diesel engines and petrol engines...  it does have the standard on the label but i cant remember it of the top of my head!

They use it in all their cars (diesels) and they seem ok and his astra 1.7D has done 350k miles and still goes very well (not even a puff of smoke comes from it)

Do you rekon its ok to use or could it be some cheapo stuff to avoid ?
Or use it but change more often ?

cheers
Dan
Dan.

it will be fine, usally industrial suppliers of oil our pretty good. it will be better then halfrauds anyway.

we used to use castrol, but now i have gone on to FUCHS LUBRICANTS, they are reconised as sutible oil for cummins and volvo, I.E the engine manufactures reconise it as being 'good enough' for thier engines.
dont let the price put you off.

Yep £4.20 for 5litres of oil is pretty dam cheap,i presume it's a straight mineral oil and not semi synthetic, there should be a spec number on it somewhere which will give some idea of it's quality.

Yes its mineral oil and be so cheap cause they probably buy it by 1000's of litres at a time.

It was something like
API CG4/SJ then some numbers
or
API SG/CE then some numbers

didnt have anything with me to write it down.

Looks good, buy a few barrels as the price of oil is bound to go up sooner or later.
