Wanting To Replace Standard Hight Suspension
« on: January 04, 2007, 17:00:31 »
I have a Disco 1996 300tdi auto and I am thinking of replacing the springs and dampers.

I do not want to lift it, just keep it standard hight.

It is currently my only vehicle so it does quite a bit of road miles. But, it also goes laning. It has no heavy duty bumpers, winches or other such add ons that may add wieght.

Anybody got any ideas on what set up to replace it with??

Thank - Nigel

Pro comp or Decarbo dampers are both a reasonable price, the ProComp have a lifetime warranty.

Bearmach or Britpart for springs, the supposed Police SPec red/whites I bought lifted RRR nearly 2" though, so be careful about heavy duty springs.

If you are after heavier duty springs, I think Britpart now do a set of heavy duty standard height springs.  I cant remember if they are handed though for the fronts.  I am planning on replacing mine as well, most likely with new standard duty height springs at the front & heavy duty at the back (either the Britpart or Land Rover ones) based on the amount of camping gear we will be lugging around this summer.  I am also planning on the pro-comp shocks.

My disco was so saggy before the lift I'm not sure if mine is at standard height now or not. It has certainly gone up in the world though from where it weas. It doesnt hit the bump stops on every speed bump now I know that for sure!!! Also taking all my tool out the back raises the back end up 1/2 an inch too.

Why on earth fit those dreadful police spec springs? What benefits do they offer? The ones I had on the 90 were too stiff and restricted the articulation. I guess they might work better on a disco but it's all about spring rates etc. so if you want to keep the same height etc. then just replace with standard spings which are pretty cheap.

As for shocks I have used Pro Comps which are great and De carbons which I know some people don't like but they transformed my Rangie so I'd guess they would be pretty good for a Disco.

I replaced the standard shocks on the Disco with some gas shocks - Armstrong would that make sense and I don't think they are anywhere near as good as they should be. If I did it again it would be Pro Comps or De Carbon for sure.

Whatever you do, don't fit police spec Range Rover springs (red/white) to a disco. The standard duty disco rear springs are over 200lb/in whilst red/whites are only 170lb/in. Range Rovers are way lighter at the back and use much softer springs.

You could do a lot worse than just fitting new standard OE springs. Land Rover spent a lot of time and money developing them, afterall. Shocks are slightly different and a set of decent gas ones will outperform the standard ones. My preference is for Koni adjustables - not the cheapest, but then when it comes to these things I'm a firm believer in the old adage of you get what you pay for.

I dont know the part numbers but it was in thier special offers area. The springset for the rear is located in a different area on the page to the rest of the shocks / springs. I will try and find them later for you.
