Engine conversion?

Just wondered how hard it is to change a discovery 3.5 v8 into a tdi powered!
What else would need to be bought apart from the engine, is it a hard job to do or is it worth swapping for something else? My v8 is fuel injected and didnt start this morning. you can hear a noise but it doesnt make nay effort to start. anyone got any advice for me?  :roll:

Check battery connections and most importantly earth straps. A simple test is to connect a jump lead from the neg terminal of the battery directly to a clean metal part of the engine. If it then cranks you know you have a bad earth connection somewhere.

Tried to fire it up this morning but it doesnt work still  :roll:  Can anyone help meto try andd get it running. At the moment when i turn the key i can just hear a whirring noise- dont know how to describe it! but then nothing happens  :cry:
It started brilliantrly last week!

have you tryed to put it in gear take the handbrake off and rock the car if you getting a wering noise could be a missing tooth on the flywheel. then try and start it.

Whirring sound when cranked sounds like the starter motor spinning without engaging in the flywheel. Could be the solenoid or stripped teeth.

Would suggest removing and inspecting. With Starter motor off, you should be able to earth it and pass 12V to it and see the drive sprocket pop forward and spin. If it's just spinning in place, the solenoid is goosed.

If there are no missing teeth in the drive sprocket... check the teeth on the flywheel... if teeth are missing there... it's a bigger problem.  :?

Not sure if the solenoid can be replaced or if it means a new starter motor complete.

yea you can get just the solenoid. In fact think i have a brand new one in my shed for when i thought the solenoid had died on my old rangy. but found it was the starter relay that had gone :roll:

It is a pre-engaged starter so the solenoid engages and then turns the starter, this is done with two contacts on the back of the solenoid.
If the shaft is rusty (due to mud) then it won't engage and therefore won't spine.
If it is spinning it must be engaging so sounds like missing teeth.
Put the wheel brace on the front pulley and turn it a little (remove the wheel brace) and try again.
If it starts then it has teeth missing on the fly wheel.

Hmmm sounds a bit scarey haha! will have a look when the weather gets nicer! When i turn the key the battery light stays on so maybe its just the battery hope so anyways... how easy is it to change/ fix the things you mention?
So what should i try first to try and get it working?
