Just a start...
« on: January 06, 2007, 23:01:35 »
I just thought I would share a few ideas spinning around in the grey matter....Sorry

Ideas for a better Britain.

Law and Order.
The best of the police enforcement ideas from history will be aligned with the best of this new millennium and used in conjunction to stop the present lawlessness.
These ideas will be derived from serving officers past and present.
They are the people on the front line, yet they do not get listened to, the politics will be taken out of policing.
Sentencing and Justice system
This will be achieved by stripping convicted persons of their human rights as we know them today. They will have the rights that they had 20 years ago, this is not going back in time, it is going over to a system that used to work before it was interfered with by those who thought they were doing good.
JP`s and Judges will have to take former crimes into consideration at all times and will pass sentences that actually take those who pose a threat to the public off the streets.
Increased capacity will be made available to ensure this happens, this capacity funding will come from the current inmates serving via finance or via skills / labour or both.

NHS
This area is fraught with incompetent management and the decisions that go with it, the management will be re-trained/replaced on a points scoring system with context to the job detail.
Politics will be taken out of the NHS at ground level, realistically politics will never be completely absent from this system, but the results would speak for themselves, enabling the electorate to make up their own mind come election time.
Primary Care Trusts
There will be more input from the local population, as they are the end users and would like a system that would resonate with themselves, this would be achievable as every surgery has a link to communicate to each and every patient, a simple questionairre could ensure that this service works for us, not against us.

The two departments above would see realistic salaries being paid to the professionals who would make it work, the Govt. of the day will not be held to ransom by the greed of some of the professionals who feel that they can be paid more than the Prime Minister of the day.

Education
Once again the politics will be taken out of this system, but the same will apply here as it does to the NHS.
Experienced teachers of all levels will be polled on what works and new intake will be asked for new ideas, these will then be put to the experienced.
I am sure that the amount of personnel in this system who are educated themselves will be more than able to assure the future of our children in the best possible way.
Examination boards will be managed in the same way.
We will give the education system back to the employees who provide it.

Motoring
Speed cameras will be taken down in rural areas, but they will remain in highly populated areas. They will be removed from the motorway network.
Road fund license will do just that, fund the road system.
You will also have to display a valid cert. of insurance.
Driving license will be subject to an assessment every five years for every vehicle type.
This will be achieved off the road in simulated circumstances, practical and theory.

General Transport Policy
Aviation fuel will be taxed at a higher rate.
Train network will be free of Govt. subsidies and ran as a real business with competition, much as the bus network is already done.

Utility Companies
Will be obliged to their customers first and foremost and not just as a mode for profit, this will be overseen by a monitoring service which will implement fines to be paid to the local community which they serve.

Benefits and Welfare System
All benefits shall be means tested.
There will be no benefits paid to any individual who has not paid into the system, no exceptions.
All persons above 65 years of age will not be subject to the above.

Immigration
Only skilled persons will be allowed to enter the country on a permanent basis, unskilled labour will be allowed temporary residence and they will be monitored by a new immigration agency.
This same agency will be given responsibility for border controls which will be tightened to a realistic level that will also ensure no convicted criminals will be allowed to enter, think of a system that Australia and the USA operate, the best of both.
Any persons currently in the country whom have been convicted previously or cannot provide an ID history will be deported.

Business
It is imperative that business is successful in this country, however, it will not be at the cost of the social health, security and general well being of the citizens of this country.
All telephone answering services will be outlawed, you will be able to speak to a real person all of the time, who will be obliged to give you their name.
Corporation tax will be raised to 15%
Owners of large business will be able to negotiate their tax requirements directly with the Govt. This dept. will monitor the said large companies and that incentives given in the negotiations are carried out.

Basically what we are trying to achieve here is to have back the integrity that we are sadly missing at the present time. This can only be achieved by having real persons doing the jobs that will ensure that this country and its population will gain socially.
There are too many individuals and companies that provide our present Govt. with sub-standard services and make a huge amount of money out of doing so, we must not lose sight of the fact that we pay for all of this, not the Govt. It is you and I, via our taxes that pay for all this shoddy service, this is in turn covered up by the civil servants who are afraid to speak out against the Govt. that employs them.

The New Govt.
First and foremost all MP`s will not be allowed to work whilst they are serving the Govt.
They have been elected by the people and shall work for the people.
An MP will never be allowed to work in an area of Govt. that would involve a conflict of interests.
Parliament would sit for 52 weeks of the year and any important debates would have to be attended, it would be the PM and his/her advisors who would decide the importance of such debates.
MPs will not decide their own pay rises, this will be done on performance of relevant departments, this will encourage MPs to work for the country and it`s people and encourage a little healthy competition between MPs.
MPs pensions will be brought into line with the general population.

International Scene.
We will cease to be a member of the EEC, we will follow the lead of the Swiss and it`s position within Europe.

We will distance ourselves politically from the USA

We will no longer finance the security services of Israel and pay for all their Police Force and buildings.

We will obviously be an important player on the worlds stage, but it would be for our benefit, not the benefit for the rest of the world at our expense.

The Elderly
Hopefully, one day we will all become old.
However, the way they are treated in this country presently leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I have been reduced to tears on numerous occasions both through personal experience and via the media.
I am 41 years of age and male, I am fit, strong and healthy, yet I am reduced to tears with the way in which our elderly are treated.
This says to myself that there is something fundamentally wrong with the country in which we live.
The generation that has gone before us deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, not just because they are old, but because, without them you and I would not be here, it is that simple, for this one single reason alone we owe them.
Unfortunately this seems to have been forgotten and many of the elderly are seen as a meal ticket by some care homes and services and if they are not seen as that, they are viewed as a financial burden by the local authority, they may not agree with this statement, but how else have we gotten into the position that we are in now with regard to caring for the elderly.

I propose that we follow the lead of Scotland and care for our elderly as they should be, how we would expect it and how they would expect it themselves, a 1penny rise on income tax would see the situation resolved.

What I have written above has been done with my limited knowledge of taxation, finance, population and births and death rates.
I know it requires a lot more knowledge than I have, but I have ideas and possibly solutions.

I have purchased the website domain www.abetterbritain.org.uk and bought a hosting package.

I have done this because I am tired of listening to myself and others constantly whining about the state of OUR country, I have been looking at other places to go to in the last 6-7 years.
I have decided I am going to stay and try and do something about it.
Don`t know where it is going to go, but I shall have a good fight getting there.

This country needs reclaiming for the residents and it needs to be improved in the process.
I care about the place in which I choose to live and the people with whom I live.

I genuinely feel that I can do a better job, however that said, I have no experience of politics, just a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong and how I would like to see things developed.

Democracy needs saving, as at the mo` it is the only system we have, we must first restore the confidence in the system as it has been eroded by the current politicians, not all, but those with the loudest voices.

I am gathering content for my website today, as I have to wait a few more hours before it is up and running with the host.

I have lot`s to say and a substantial amount of ideas to back up what I have to say. Some of it will be ill informed, but as in life, nothing is 100%.

I am just a voice in 60 million, but I shall use it to the best of my ability.

So I guess, yes is the answer to your question :D

Wouldn't it be nice if we realy could get a government which actually looked after the countries interests.

All he current one is interested in, is it's place in history. (probably go down as the biggest national disaster since Boudica lost the axle grease for her chariot).

I agree with just about every thing you have said, and look foreward with interest to where you go with this.  I think you could well have a lot of support.

 Pete.

I have to say that, though in some items I couldn't disagree more with you, I do have to admire the drive behind your post.

Most of us will gripe, moan and generally be grumpy, but do not have the energy, the time, or simply the will to do anything. On that alone, you deserve recognition.

similarly, whilst i disagree on some of your points, at least you have an opinion and are happy to give reasons for your views, and want to do something about it.

I'll keep an eye out for the website when it's up and running - there could be a few good debates to be had.

If only a few more people would care about this great country we live in!

Here Here. There are more than a few issues alone in what you have said and I dont agree with it all but bravo.

As for caring for this country. I think its gone beyond that point for a lot of people now. I vote and watch the elections and political situations for the country I've been accepted as a citizen of, not the UK. AFAIK I'm past caring and not a whole lot can actually be done. Far too many people who stand to benefit from things staying as they are now. Which leads me to wonder if the only two ways out arent to leave or become on of the 'elite' somehow.

Go for it!
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.
