Driveline backlash and vibration
« on: January 08, 2007, 14:17:16 »
Hi folks. Some advice needed, I have just got a 93 Disco 200 tdi and although it's pretty decent there are a couple of issues.
1. Rather concerning vibration/shudder above 55-60mph. It appears to come from the front.
After looking thru various past posts I have checked prop uj's and there appears to virtually no play front or back. No play in the plined sections either. No excessive wear in suspension bushes either.
2. But while doing these checks there does seem to be a fair bit of free play in the centre diff. Now from looking at posts this could either be the transfer box or gearbox, how do you tell the difference??
The gearbox does feel nice and tight, with the notchy 2nd gear very rarley rearing it's ugly head.
If I can get these things sorted that would be great because it's a really clean model with good power and economy.

Any advice would be greatly welcomed.

Cheers
Mark  :D

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

Check your front wheel bearings and and your steering damper

Vibration, well typically at 30-35 MPH and again at 70-75MPH would be the propshaft, you may not notice it at 30 for a start, so 60 -65 could be the prop, or the wheels.

Backlash, they do that, stop worrying.

Secondary vibrations and harmonics here RRB

Day before xmas eve I went out to get a few late pressies for he grandkids . . . . that vibration I'd had for a week or so previously suddenly turned into a 'somethings gonna break' type vibration.

Ended up sorting the front prop uj's for the afternoon.

Truth known, I've done enough uj's to recognise the warning signs so I was aware what was coming . . . . . but the tiiming of it was a bit of a [!Expletive Deleted!].

Either way I'd been under the motor a few days before and giving the prop/uj's a good shake about . . . . . even though there was little evidence of free play in the bearings they failed a couple of day later . . . .  :?

But hey . . . . it's a Land Rover . . . . . [!Expletive Deleted!] happens

Christmas was saved and thanks to Simon, (Simon Services, at Warmfield), for letting me shove the truck on his ramps at such short notice . . . . I was back on the road within the hour

Check the panhard rod bushes and bolts. Wear in those could cause similar problems.
