*&%*$£* electrics!
« on: October 28, 2004, 09:51:32 »
Last night while driving back from the hospital, I decided to pop over to Westcroft to our local restaurant MacDonald’s for dinner, went through the drive-in and was pleasantly surprised as I reached the second window my meal was ready! As I pull out onto the main road Mr Bling or Mr Chav in his body-kitted light blue sierra with a silly spoiler pulled out in front of me, my reaction was to give him the full blast of the main beam and quick blast of the horn, which his reply was the one finger salute, so another flash of the headlights to say thanks.

With the second flash the radio turned off, and a clicking/buzzing sound came from behind the dash….. not again went through my mind   . Not wanting my meal to get cold I continued home, eat my MacDonald’s Tasty meal. Then venture out on the drive in the rain to see what has happened.

Radio, full beam, clock, internal lights not working, and the clicking/buzzing sound still present from behind the dash (even with the ignition off) First I check the fuse on the Aux circuit, black as the ace of spades. So I replaced, and the clicking/buzzing sound has stopped. Turned the radio on and pop the fuse blows again. But no clicking or buzzing sound anymore. So I guess another earth problem!

Who mention the electrics at the weekend (Ed - Paul can’t remember who but was asked if the electrics on Turtle were ok now - guess not   )

The question is where should I start, earth straps battery/body/engine or gearbox? Is there a relay or something behind the dash that’s gone faulty? My main concern is that while the horn isn’t working its broke the circuit to the alarm, as I’m now unable to arm.

Any help would be grateful.

Thats what u get for flashing at the locals,i find the term chav very offensive thanx, just some people have no taste & you should have done the decent thing & parked the sierra in another part of the car park utalising the front bumper,(I do get funny looks when people see me in my clio then see me in the racer, they take me on at the lights in the clio but never in the racer Hmmmmmm wonder why,)it must only be an english thing to give the finger at people in larger vehicles,up here the indian rules of the road apply.

I stoped worrying about people pulling out in front of me long ago, after all you can't see them as they vanish under the front end anyway.

Had a good rummage over the weekend, and found in the rear of the dash a wire that was broken that feed the live to clock, once repaired, was able to insert a new fuse with popping, now have the radio, interior lights, full beam/flash and the clock working but...... no horn, have replaced the unit with a new one, and ran a new earth just in case, but still unable to get working.

Any ideas?

Just a case of tracing it back I guess Phil... you should +ve volts at the horn wire when the switch is pushed...   if not, then back to either side the switch, and so on.

Was round my mates this afternoon, he had to replace the sidelight bulbs in a ldv van, same headlights as the 200 disco, he got a set of blue led bulbs, got his lad to put them in (Patrick!, Ed  )

He said one is working the other dont work, that was when he found out that the leds were polarity sensitive, I just unplugged it turned it round and one red faced lad
