Electric Seat problems...... Now Fixed!!!!

I have just purchased a 1990 Range Rover and am ironing out some problems.

The electric seats aren't functioning because the switchs aren't in place. Plus the wiring has been taken out of the little black boxes that fit into the switch assembly. I would like to refit the wires into these parts but i have no idea how they go.

Does anyone have a copy of an understandable wiring diagram, or photo, or a description.

do you know why they were disconnected? maybe a problem with them.

I hope that there isn't a problem.

However i have come up with a solution. In my local scrapyard there is Range Rover there that had elecric seats that still has its block connectors in place but no switchs. Take the wire cutters and hey presto i have something to follow.

As of last night, my electric seat problems have ended.

After replacing relays and fuses (that the Haynes   said nothing about), plus rebuilding the switches themselves. It is now all good.

Now for the tailgate........ it never ends.

Did the switches take much getting apart I have just got a 1991 and the drivers seat does not move forward (but goes back) and the passenger seat is same as well as not tilting forward

The switches simply pry apart with a small flat head screw driver.

However you need to be carefull not to let the springs, ball bearings and contacts fall out everywhere.

Once open it looks abit daunting, but clean all the contacts up, reposition everyting and give it a go.

Also check the fuses underneath the passenger seat. Acces is via the rear seat footwell. You should see four 30 amp fuses, two of mine had burnt out.

I took the D S seat switch to bits today and put back together and it worked. Its not that simple so step by step instructions follow.

1 Pull off switch actuators
2 Remove lid by using small flat screwdriver. (4 slots in each corner)
3 Remove 2 crosshead screws holding inner unit in place.
4 Pry out inner unit (can be VERY tight) so be careful.
5 Dissconnect 2 connection blocks
6 Take unit in house and place on kitchen table on newspaper
7 Remove single crosshead screw from bottom of unit
8 Using small screwdrivers remove inner unit lid  (there are 7 catches to press in)
9 Remove lid carefully.
10 By now there will be springs, ball bearings and contacts all over the bottom of the unit. Note where levers are located including boss on outer2 levers. Tip them all into bowl. There should be 8 springs and 16 ball bearings and 3 levers.
11 All but one lever comes out
12 Clean contacts on base and 8 off contacts that should be in bowl using fine emery paper
13 Reassemble levers as they were.
14 Slide contacts under lever assy.
15 Insert ball bearing then spring into both sides of lever assys
16 Apply a small amount of vasaline to top of each spring and balance 8 remaining ball bearings ontop of springs.
17 CAREFULLY replace lid
18 Refit screw
19 Refit unit to vehicle.
20 Cross fingers and hope it all works.

Patence and a steady hand is required for this job (I also have some pics if any one requires)
