It looks like im going to order some of those insa turbo special tracks, im going for the 265/75/16's
but im also thinking of a 2" lift at the same time, what i would like to know is, is this kit any good? http://www.paddockspares.com/products.asp?tp=1&partno=DEFKIT1PFULL

remember, i do 50 miles a day on road so i realy dont want a massive lift, also i have found that if you go to high you start to get problems with the drive train. All i want is a good all round vehicle.

Many many people will dissagree with me but I'd avoid pro-comp shocks like the plague
I'm very keen to learn what the new "super gaz" shocks are like as they seem to be better made and have longer waranty than the pro-comp units

I have to ask, why do you say this?
I had the Explorer ES9000 shock and the +2" rear springs on my LWB pajero and found them to be superb both on and off road.
Im not arguing bu im intrigued.

on My old 90 in my avatar i had OME shocks and springs and off roaded it very hard indeed i had them fitted for well over a year no worries and they guy i sold the truck to still runs them over 2 years after i sold it him

Then i bought the disco and thought i'd save some cash by gettin some pro-comps instead     they broke every time i went out off roadin either the eyelet would snap the threaded bar on the bottom would come off -Taught me the lesson of "you get what you pay for"

I would go for +5" shocks and there associated mounts as you will gain a lot more travel, you can always just fit jubilee clips to the springs if you dont have the cash for dislocation cones, it may seem like more expence but +5 procomps are the sme price as +2" so why not go for the extra length so you have it. I dont think you need +2" lift for those tyres on defender although it will be tight but obviosly lifting your motor will increase the COG and thus make on road handling pretty bad unless you go for higher rate springs which will then mean they wont flex as well as standard which is what a lot of lifts give you. Speak to the guys at Devon 4X4 as they really know there stuff and will give you some good advice.

Will.
if you you can make it i can break it.

They do, but you do get a little rub on the arches when you're off-road. Having said that, they also rub on the arms as well so you could really do with spacers and wider arches too!

Joker:

Pleased to see you managed to get your 90. Looks smart! The 'Special Tracks' are superb. Cheviot 4x4 were selling them at around £55 unfitted (plus p&p) so they may work out cheaper than Paddocks. Worth a look!

To get the most out of the car realy without going OTT.

I have some 265/75/16 AT's on at the mo, (carnt remember what make) and they look close, i thought they may rub under articulation, and knowing that the size quoted on these tyres is the carcas size then you add the size/ depth of tread onto that.

Im not a total numpty when it comes to off roading its just that i have no experiance with defenders and the products that work best for them. My experiance is with the jap imports mainly pajeros.

I must stress that my defender has to get me to work first thing on a monday morning, so big lifts, 35's and so on are out of the question i realy do need it to be reasonably reliable. I understand that when off roading certain breakages are inevitable but when you start putting prop shafts and linkages under strain before you even set off you are asking for trouble on a 14 year old vehicle that has to be used every day.

Thanks mate,

a 1 inch lift will make the tyres "just" touch pending what rims u have,i have +1 just now & they rub hard on the arches but clear the radious arms cos o the offset im running, so im going to +2 springs as i currently run +2 shocks,+5 shocks & standard props WILL bind, had +2s moded n the props were whoora close

Can i just make a quick point re pro comps and 'super gaz' shox...

The 'super gaz' shocks are not made by GAZ... ive had sooo many phone calls from ppl asking why GAZ's sell for 80ish quid and Super GAZ sell for 25 quid... !?!

GAZ make very high quality, comp spec shox, super gaz are made by britpart, and are not as written in LRO built with fully machined eyes and pins... they are welded the same as monroe, decarbon and pro comp.. thus why they have weld and clamp lines on...

Ive now fitted a set to a 90 and they feel and drive very simular to the monroe shock, tho they seem ok we shall see how they put up with play days, im not convinced but someones got to be devils advocate lol

 :-#

Personally id go for a good quality plus two spring and a plus four shock with a good quality set of brake lines... Just remember cheep doesnt always mean quality...
be warned the curley haired one is here !
