Buying a used 110. What to look for?
« on: January 15, 2007, 21:24:43 »
Sorry, this is being a cross post from the rovernet forums,if this is allowed i would appreciate it!

So,in short, I´m preparing here to buy a used 110 from germany (they are 1/3 the price there than here in scandihoovia) and I am now in the process to learn what to look after when buying a used.

The specs will be that my budget is <7000€ with wich i will/could get a 96/97 car with 160.000km-190.000km in the meter.. If some Gynther hasnt been fondling with the tacho..

I am not a professional mechanic, but a relatively handy person, that finally has some own space where i can do tinkering. I have/have had some 4wd vehicles in the past, but nothing like Defender (with the reputation of being a tinkers dream) so this is a bit new world.
The stuff that i would mod on the car would be a small lift (2"?), snorkels, painting, underarmor and a winch at some point. The car would be the 2nd/everyday car/tool for me and my wife.

So:

A.What to look for ?
B.What to expect?
C.Is there any special problems that the "german" use might cause?
I.a. Autobahn speeds being detrimenal to the drivetrain etc...

All help is appreciated, and I beg you for a pardon, if it is of bad style to post the same question on different boards. I am just in a dire need of info since we dont have that strong local clubthing going on around here..

Thanks in advance!

B.What to expect? slow, heavy, but unbeatable offroad!
C.Is there any special problems that the "german" use might cause?
I.a. Autobahn speeds being detrimenal to the drivetrain etc. if they had any sense then they wouldnt dirve it fast on the autobahn! after all its a landrover.

Hi Splinter, I regularly drive my V8 110 on the Autobahns, only problem I have had is not being able to pass many petrol stations!

As for "german use" I can't imagine there being much differance to the rest of europe, the roads are generally good so the suspension doesn't get bashed about on the roads.  I would imagine corrosion would be the same too, with the climate as it is and the salt used to grit the roads.  It would really depend on where abouts in Germany the Landy has been used most, i.e North, South, East or West.

I can honestly say I have not seen many Land Rovers up this end of the country (Kiel, on the Baltic coast) I can count on one hand the number I see locally regularly, of those that I have seen, there has been only one that was modified and that was a very well expedition prepared 110.  Most seem to be used for towing horses etc and I doublt they would see any serious off road use.  That said though, there are undoubtably Landys that have been abused off road, I just haven't seeen any!
Steve
