Problem: UJ's/Propshaft/clutch. How can I check?
« on: January 15, 2007, 23:24:00 »
Hi, my defender td5 is making some very strange noises.

BRRRRRRRRRRUMNNNNNN SOUND

1) At low revs pulling away I hear a "brrrrrrrummm" like a vibration coming from underneath the truck. Wondering if it could be the Propshafts or Uj's having issues. Seems worse when im turning out of a road (1st gear, 90 deg turn onto road) sounds worse in that situation I believe.

2) Clutch!?
Sometimes on a morning straight after firing it up, I depress the clutch and I hear a sound thats like a moan which I can feel through the pedal too. After driving the sound goes away. I tried pumping it while stationary (around 6 times) and it still does it. After driving for a very short time 1/4mile it is fine. What could this be?

I have access to a ramp to get under but I dont know A) What to do or B) Where to look.

Any help on what I think will be an easy one for some of you guys would be appreciated.

Cheers everyone,

T.....unusually poorly 90  :?

James...

Your 90 sounds like it's about to go bang big time... and will end up as nothing but scrap.

Because I'm kind, I'll happily buy it off you for £1500 even in the state of disrepair it is currently in!
The amount of polish and wax on it is probably worth that much alone!!!    :D

 :D

On a more serious note:

1) Could possibly be propshafts or CV's in the worse case.  But could even be a vibration down the exhaust pipe.
Easiest way to eliminate the propshafts is to either sell the 90 to me or....

Remove the front propshaft and go for a drive (you will need the difflock in) and see if the noise disappears.
If not, refit the front prop and remove the rear one and go for a drive again (still in difflock).  If the noise is still there then you've eliminated the props.

Next, have a look at the exhaust and make sure it's not to close to any of the chassis etc and that all the fittings are tight.

Does the noise get worse if you drive around in circles on full lock??

2) Possibly the release bearing sticking slightly... might go away...or might just get worse. At the moment I wouldn't worry too much.  The other thing it could be is the flywheel breaking up (with Td5's do suffer from - as do Transits)... but I don't think this will be the case.

If the noise continues, or gets worse would be time for a new clutch assembly - and a proper look at the flywheel etc etc.

If you fancied a drive down, I know someone who'd do this for you

James, if you fancy a drive over to my girlfriends parents again could have a look if you want - I'm up there the 27th/28th Jan.
If i've got a car from work I'd even pop over to yours if easier.

1,could be just a wheel bearing ? Jack each wheel up in turn and grab it at 12 and 6 give it a good wobble

2, sounds like thrust (relaese bearing) if the noise stops whilst pedal is down then comes back when you release it then thats what it'll be nothing too severe i've known them be noisy and not totally fail for over a year

Whats all this about pub meets? Fill me in please :) A load of drunk LR drivers bombing down the road sounds excellent.

Yes Im in Castleford.

Porny, that weekend it might be in for a prop, UJ CHECK , at LR by an apprentice lad. Through old mans workplace after work so a very small fee. Access to a ramp and all that is better than on a drive I guess?!!!

If your about Ian a meet up would be cool anyway. Id sling you some £ if you want for a diagnostic check. However, I think your girlfriend will end up findin me and killing me with the time I take up on your weekends up.

SHe might think your having an affair with my Landy.....or mE!!!! JOKE! :D    HAHA.

Thanks everyone for the advice. The clutch sound happens when depressing it. On release it stops. Weird. Its lame being a technical noob as myself.

Seems I have a lot to check.

Porny on another note my mpgs have been 27.9, 29.3, 27.6  so Im thinking the air flow meter is working now. Im on a super economy drive this month. Going to see what I can get out of it.
