« on: January 18, 2007, 14:59:38 »
Had a crash this morning, i shant go into details too much but the end results are below!

Essentially Landrover --> Van --> Red Car --> Blue Car.

Thankfully everyone walked away relatively ok, although to say i'm a little sore and stiff is a understatement!

I agree. Better that your legs don't have the same kind of bends as your bumper does now.

Never mind, it'll buff out.

I'm in a lot of pain at the moment, back neck and head - but found out a landy steering wheel is actually quite soft (altho my cheek/nose doesnt agree!)

We are all lucky to be walking away, like people have said metal can be fixed...altho 3 of the 4 cars are proably writeoffs :(

No, its not drivable, damaged front, rad, intercooler, stearing, chassis the works.

Yes, essentially i rammed the vehicles.

I came around a corner to be faced with the back of a van, stationary with no brake lights on or anything. I braked, skidded and hit him, due to not having his brakes on he hit the red car, then the red car hit the blue car!

It all went in slow mo, i remember thinking when i wasnt gonna stop, then swearing then bang, nothing! I was then nearly flattened by a 40T artic coming the other way who only just stopped in time.

I get a loan car today for 48 hours, after that it depends whats happening but my insurance dont give me one!!

The big landrover/jag/other bodyshop round here had it, arrived a few hours ago and is being assessed as i type. Might take a drive up there to speak to them once my hire car arrives.

Its going to be close as to it being written off or not, the van almost certainly is and probably the red car too.

check the hire car over with a fine tooth combe when it arrives, i got one when some [ed: naughty] caved the door in on my "parked" BMW, when they delivered it it was snowing and it had a crack in the windscreen only i didn't see cos it had snow covering it, they said it was my fault for not checking so i had to pay for a new screen !!

Kid at school today decided it would be fun to go out in his 3-day-old Yaris and do some skids.  Apparently, the first one was quite good, but the second one pitched it on its side.  And he wonders why his insurance is expensive.

I wouldn't give up hope.  It's quite a modern Land Rover being a Td5 isn't it?

Because of that, it has a high value and if the costs required to get it back to how it was is less than the value then you should have that happen. ;)  New chassis, new front end and the odd ancillary and it should be good to go I imagine.

Rich....

You've missed the main cost - LABOUR!!!
Chances are if the 90 needs new chassis it will be written off... as the cost of the chassis, all new panels, paint etc etc and then labour soon add up.

Smo...

Hope your ok!... as everyone has already said... No one was badly hurt (apart from sore necks and your pride!!) - and everything else is metal.

However... if they do write it off, or won't have it repaired... BUY IT BACK!!!  Ideal basis for your off roader!
If they give you option to buy it back, and you don't want it - give me a shout, depending on the price I might be interested.

The way the landy is built may well mean that a rebuild on the front end is viable, hope so, lot of time in that motor by the looks of it

At least you will be able to drive, hate to think what the result of a normal car going throught the same impact would have done to you

One point, if the van didn't have his brakes on and was pushed into the vehicle in front, your insurance company may be able to do something about the collatoral damage on the other vehicles in front of the van, ie through his insurance, might be worth a word with them if you havn't already

With the van not having his brakes on has probably saved you alot of injuries as he was in theory a soft impact instead of a solid object, you hit an object that took the force and moved away again.

Glad your well though.

Possibly, had he have had his brakes on then i would have known he was stationery much sooner than i did.

But doesnt matter! We all walked away and are ok, if a little sore!

Indeed, not so much a bummer though because in this case it clearly was my fault, no wriggling or denying it.

If he'd had his handbrake on, wouldn't that mean his brake lights weren't lit?  Sounds daft, but I've never been sure whether brake lights are connected to the handbrake too.

No they arent as the brake lights would be on all the time when your parked and flaten your battery and have you ever got out your car and popped something in the boot and seen the brake lights on  It is a good idea though that hand brake should be wired up to brake lights when the engine is running.

On a road such as it was you wouldnt be applying the handbrake in any curcumstances especially not for someone turning off. It just so happens that  no brake lights were showing at all!

At junctions and traffic lights etc when your stopped for a few seconds or more your supposed to apply the hand brake as holding your foot on the foot brake (i have been told) creates the brake disk to warp as the metal where the pads done touch cool down faster than the metal under the pads.

I am no expert on hand brakes but surely non LR vehicles have the brake pads on the rear wheels pull on by the hand brake. Any truth in this?
