The do make a big difference, but not as much as learning to drive off road properly :) (Not a dig, just an observation from experience)On road i found them better than the General Grabber road tyres my 90 came on.

I'm more used to driving in heavy snow rather than mud. Perhaps I'll need to take my pal up on some defender off road lessons too -- after I get my new mud tyres of course! :D
alloys.. this a prob?
went to Kwik Fit to check price on the BFG MT's 265x75xR16 and they want £104 each... I can do much better than this on the net, (maybe I ought to tell them and I might get a deal or price match?) They also inform me they will fit my alloy wheels at size 7Jx16x35.Thanks everyone for all your help and expertise. Shall post a pic when I get them on!
My BFG MT's handle excellently in all weather with little or no noticable road noise. They also wear very well with plenty of tread even after 18K mostly on road with weekend muddy/rocky outings.

Unfortunatly the General grabber MT's only come in 235/85 and my Disco would need modifications to fit those
