I had the heater ongoing into work today as it was a tad chilly. I had it on blower 4 but that keeps on over heating so no3 on full heat is the best compramise.
I had it on 3 and turned engine off, took key out of ignition and the blowers were still working :shock:
I turned it down to 2 and they turned off.Wierd I thought.
Came home and had blowers on 3 again to see if it did it again. and they did. Key in my paw and fan still on. turned fan onto 2 and still working, onto 1 AND still going. :roll:
If I try and turn the fan up the scale it stops dead and on 0 it stops too.
My thinking was if the key is in my paw there would be no power to the fans, only the interior light and alarm. Is there some major leccy wiring going mad and about to short out and set disco on fire :( or is there a perfectly good reason for this like the heater matrix needs to cool down?
Any help needed please.

No help from me, but our heater was on full (hot) today in the disco and just turned off on its own :?

does yours come back on after a few seconds after it has cooled down a bit? mine does.

The blower switch is the culprit for the fan cutting off when on HI. The contacts get hot, the fan stops, contacts cool down, it comes back, etc. etc.
As for the original problem from muddyjames...
What do you mean by overheating? If you have the cuts off on HI speed deal, put a switch in first and see if all the mystery goes away (it sounds like you may from the last reply). If not, perhaps a relay?

Not 100% sure what you mean in your post?
The contacts getting warm is why the fan cuts out then but why does my fan stay on even when the key is in my hand and not in the ignition? When I turn the fan down it turns off. If I turn the fan speed up it doesnt come back on.
Are the contacts melting and keeping it on? I cant see it would be this as fan shouldnt work until ignition is on surely?

That's the bit that I'm not sure of either, but if the switch has suffered a meltdown of some sort, then any live circuit in it may keep the fan on. Hi blower runs straight through the switch, no resistors. The fact that it will shut off when you turn the fan down makes me think there is an issue in the switch.
You do (or did) have the problem with the Hi fan cutting out, right?

fan cuts out when on speed 4 and on max heat. if i turn either speed or temp down it doesnt cut out.

The switch is the culprit.
If you have a truck with dual A/C (I know, not too popular in the UK) the rear switch in the overhead is the same as the front switch in the dash, BTW.

I only have A/C that doesnt work and bits taken off it like idler pully, no gas etc. no over head A/C.
surely the fan should shut off with the ignition?

Maybe not if a live circuit in the switch is melted over to the fan circuit.
I may well be wrong - as is sometimes the case :roll: but since we know the switch is no good because it cuts out, it seems the easiest place to go.
I'll try and check a circuit diagram when I get a chance (after work) and see if there may be something else, too.

ok cool cheers.
My main worry is if there is a melted switch or something will it catch fire? I seriously hope not. Alos I am guessing it will mean a complete dash board pull out to solve it :( that will be either expensive or a huge nightmare

well. this was the easiest fix I have ever done and the cheapest. I turned the disco off yesterday and the blower stopped as well. It seams to have mended itself.
It still cuts in and out on full speed blowers though!!!

ive had a similar problem with my 200tdi when i pull up and turn off i get out lock it and go in the house but on several occasions as ive got to the front door ive noticed the engine is still running ? in order to turn it off i either need to stall it or sit like a fool for ten mins turning the key on and off even the immobiliser kicks in but still running ? think it got mind of its own lol

Merc Vitos & Sprinters have a similar problem and its the resistor for the fan, basically No 4 = 12 Volts, No's 3,2 & 1 are resisted, if the resistor goes on holiday you either get all 12v or nothing..... but I've not known them run after the key is removed, must be connected to the "Lucas Prince Of Darkness" thing!
Buy a Zuke..... Heat ? Fan ? What Luxury.
