im baffled for once
« on: January 24, 2007, 22:07:03 »
here goes
if i hold a steady speed in 4th gear, then hit the loud pedal, i get a horrable nasty vibration throughout the whole vehicle ( not through the steering wheel )

and the other thing that is puzzling me is if im plodding around in 3rd gear there is a slight tapping noise from up front ish area but it only happens when is up to operating temp ( it isnt engine cos i switched off and coasted its still there   )

now, it isnt wheel bearings, it isnt pads, it isnt uj's cos they all been changed, its not mud stuck on a wheel (its clean for a change   )

i did think it had something to do with the bent front propshaft    ( dont ask me how ive done it cos i dont no meself   )
but when changing uj i took it for a spin to no avail

diff oils have been changed as per usual after everydunking and both were crystal clear

now when the t/b and main box oils were changed prior they aint been done yet

the transfere box was a bit on the thick side so was flushed through thoughly 3 times then fresh oil ( i have drained a spot off since and its clear )

the main box wasnt red it was white    so drianed off and flushed through ect ect and is now clear

so    cmon get your thinking caps on cos its annoying me, i feel like throwing another front diff at it and a new box and transfere box, but yano ill do all that and it wont cure it

o its started to jump out of 2nd btw

seconded. ours does it in 5th... if you sit at 30mph in 5th which it will just about do, its fine. if you nail it at 30 in 5th, it makes a foul noise until you either back it off or change down

I think you've answered your own question:

As it only does the nasty noise in 4th, the tick only in 3rd and jumping out of second you need to reapir or swap out the main box.

The tick is likely a chipped gear tooth, the nasty noise and popping of 2nd maybe because of a damaged thrust washer or similar in the box.
If it's not leaking, it's out of oil

hey dan

well looks like another gear box for you, uve only just changed it aint ya???

before reading some of the replys i was going to tell you to look at your passenger rear wheel/bearing, etc cuz when i was following you it had abit of a wobble on it, it may have been a bubble in the side wall of those simex, but i tryed to see if the wheel was wobbling aswell, well couldnt realy tell, but im atleast 80% sure it wasnt your tyre.... cud be just a few loose wheel nuts....... the drivers side rear wasnt doing it at all, so something is up with that, but dont think that its going to make the problems your having, but defo needs looking at

sorry for not telling ya sunday, completly passed my mind after getting there and forgetting my money

and i know ya dont need to hear this rite now but.................

......... ha ha you did break something, new it was too good to be true :D you may have not got stuck, and i did.... LOADS.... and u made every one elses vehicle look crap compaired to urs, but mine didnt break anything, well except for ripping off the tow bar and blowing the fuse to the trailer lights lol

sorry dan u know u always break something lol..... well hope ya get it sorted, cant keep the beast off the road for to long (should i say off-road), will be missed loads.... well if ya need help or a 75mm spanner u no where i am lol
I LOVE MUD!!!!!! but my engine doesnt

Mine will sit happily in the gears until you nail it in fourth or fifth at low speed, then it starts juddering.

You cant be saying we all need new boxes (i had it before my box was changed and its there afterwards).

Is it clutch slip?
Unpassable you say?!

I wonder at times what some people expect from a Defender.
I can manage 30mph[ actual] in 5th gear. That's about 1,100 rpm.
I certainly don't expect any engine to be able to increase speed easily from that sort of position. I would be changing down.

Dan.I was going to suggest hand brake over adjusted. However if it's jumping out of second gear it looks as if the box needs to come out !!!

right,
afink ive sussed the vibration in 4th, been thinking all day    yes i do have some form of brain
before i changed my engine, with there being a 200tdi under the bonnet pumping out around the 155bhp mark
if i nailed it in 4th id get no where cos the power couldnt be transmitted down the shift its sorry 2.3t ass, the clutch just slipped
so ive changed the clutch for a fancy one
so no it doesnt slip it pulls no matter what speed o and also its been opend up more aswel
so afink that might be that solved
( time will tell with 2nd gear )
and the tappin im more than sure its the center diff telling me get stuffed its not haveing a hammering like it did at the weekend again ( disco-v8 will back me up   )
so im just going run it and see what happens
fix it when its broken cos then ill no for sure
oooo adam btw u going coyney this weekend ??
ill ring you closer to the time if u dont respond on here

no, the flywheel that was splipping is on the old engine, ive bunged this new un in which was in std form not modded so hasnt had a clutch slipping
afink im just going run it mike and see what happens
o its not the zuast neither, the closest part to anything rubbing vibrating is the downpipe so i removed it and went for a blast still the same  :?
anyhows not worried about the vibration, its this damn tapping noise
i cant make out what it is it isnt loud enough and could be traveling from anywhere  :?
