I have had a problem with this since I bought my 200tdi. The power steering doesn't work if the veh is left for more than a few hours between trips and starts to work after a few heavy turns of the steering wheel. Normally at the end of my road. Its not to bad and I can live with it, but it will I no doubt give out all together one day.

I am trying to get to the bottom of what the problem is. Is it the Box or the Pump. The belt is nice and tight and the pump looks like a replacement. However. When I left her running to defrost yesterday the Power Steering worked from the off. Its as if there is a delay after the engine starts running to the steering coming on line. Is this more likley to be the pump and not the box.

Anyone?

Don't want to ask a stupid question but is the oil clean and up to the level, sounds like lack of oil or an air block in my experience but someone might know different :wink:

Oil levels is fine and has been done. Def a Box or Pump problem.

sounds like pump not keeping up. might look like a new one, you might be supprised what a steam clean can do! esecially if you just bought it.
i have a 200tdi i think i could get away with saying new engine just fitted, but it aint never left that engine bay.
not sureabout air lock, as i love puddles of oil on the gravel and have loads, and when my pump squealls because its dry, i just fill the tank up withnew chaep engine oil and it shuts up, power steering works perfect almost straight away, never had air lock, they must self prime, only thing i do is just go lock to lock a couple of times.
as for curing leaks, there isnt no such thing to be honest, but you can hide things for a while, on a defender i have i bought a bottle of bodge slop, cannot remember what it was but from that stand at billing, i diddnt believe a word he told me, but at about £20 for a half litre bottle stumped up tipped in , and you know what, it was cured!, well not really but as its like almost set glue it takes ages to drip out and does last for ages, so i have to say greatly reduces the leak.
getting bored yet!
anyway price of a bottle of bodgeslop times how many bottles over how long will soon equal more than a shiney brand new steering box.
its a bit like tyres 10 sets of remoulds or 1 set of proper tyres.

I can recomend the Lucas stuff, a mat eof mine sells in on E-Blag and it does the trick.

However, you rpoblme souonds exactly like a slipping belt, and that's worrying because you have checked it.

An air lock wouldn't cause this because ultimately air still transmits pressure.

There are relif valves within the pump, perhaps these are stuck?

Try flushing it out and refilling, otherwise try a substitute pump.

Thanks guys. There are no leaks. I must have the only G reg Disco which doen't leave a spot of anything on my driveway. Its as clean as a whistle underneath. I am guessing the pump, but I think I will try a nre belt first, see if that works, its the cheapest option anyway.
