The number of bolts to the chassis.  3 bolt are usually earlier models so I would guess 4

how old is the box?

if you are unsure or its old you would be best replacing it with a recon one, havin fitted seal kits in the past for the vehicle to come back with it leaking again within 2 months its not worth the effort to remove it to replace a seal that "might" leak again,do it once n job done

The difference is that the 3 bolt ones are imperial threads, the 4 bolt are metric (I was told 3 bolt are stronger).

Anyone ever seen a 6 bolt?
Blue,  1988  Range Rover 3.5 EFi with plenty of toys bolted on
Chuggaboom, 1995 Range Rover Classic
1995 Range Rover Classic Vogue LSE with 5 big sticks of Blackpool rock under the bonnet.
