Somewhat knackered headlight connectors
« on: January 30, 2007, 01:10:59 »
Seems the headlight connectors are somewhat knackered on my 300tdi. Passenger side light hardly ever works, but fiddling with the connector turns it on again. Drive over a bump, say byebye to light. Drivers side light also occosionally cuts out, but nowhere near as often. Again fiddling with the connector gets it working again. WD40 doesn't seem to help at all, and get the same with new bulbs fitted, so I think it's loose contacts on the actual connectors.

Are these easy to get hold of as replacement parts, and if so are they easy to replace? If not, what's the best course of action?

Cheers,
Matt

I had a similar issue, bought a new bulb but it was a dodgy connection! Very annoying. Maybe you could remove the lamp and hard solder in some new wires with spade connectors to the existing plug pins?

Or maybe some replacement lamps?

Just go to any scrapyard and cut the  plugs off of something that uses H4 bulbs - loads to choose from.  Leave yourself enough wire to solder to.  I keep them when we have to change headlights at work - on some cars the plug is inside the light and therefore not rusty etc.  Replaced mine already, but I always keep spares.

You can buy bakerlite connection terminals for headlights that just crimp onto the cables once you've chopped the old one off. I have one in my garage, i'll hunt it down and post you a picture.

I got a pair from Shelltune in Northampton. Only a couple of quid a go.

our 110 did that. get an electrical screwdriver and bend the contacts in again. bit of wd40, back together and it will most likely work

Cheers for the info, will try bending the contacts back with a small screwdriver, and if that doesn't work I'll get myself some new connectors!
