200 TDI TUNING TIPS PLEASE - Ian, Mike in particular !
« on: February 02, 2007, 19:40:43 »
OK - time to try and get the 90 going like a proper engine (V8!)
I have read over the tuning tips that Ian very kindly sent me some months ago and would like to go ahead with some engine mods
Full size intercooler - is this the way to go ? suppliers, cost, any other bits required or any other mods help ?
What can I reasonably expect as a result of any tuning ?
All help gratefully received cos I know bu**er all about diesels
Also meant to ask - the centre box in the exhaust is blowing badly, rather than replacing this is there any advantage in just fabricating a bit of pipe to do away with the box ?
Thanks in advance
Kenny

200 will batter your average v8 anyway ;) in answer to part of your question, yes a piece of pipe welded in is good for removing center box.

sorry boys but you aint got a hope of getting close to 155bhp with out a turbo mod. save your cash on massive intercooler the up rated standard fit is just the job.lose the centre box tweek the pump this will have to come off to be done right. and re calabrated.just to give you an idea, i had a 300 tdi in the tomcat, £2,600 later i got it up to 170bhp this had vanaken injectors vanaken inj pump big comp hibrid turbo, lowered comp ratio, high boost pressure, hiflow air filter, gas flowed head, and a re profiled camshaft ,vernier timing gears, lightend and balanced crank, con rods ,fly wheel, and my own labour,so un less you are going to put a load of cash in to it dont hope for a massive improvment. you can get this engine up to 200bhp with l.p.g injection but you lose the reliability big time, this is just my own story, dont be put off modding just dont want you wasting cash and being diapointed good look mate.

                            john.t ....... tweeked 3.9 v8 225bhp much better and sounds fab.......
if its got boobs or wheels its bound to be trouble

Thanks Mike, and John - All comments are welcomed, as already stated I know NOTHING about diesels !
Mikee I will give you a bell sometime next week when I get a minute if that's ok
Anyone got an opinion on the intercoolers that  Straight Forward Supplies sell - they seem well priced at £175 plus p&p

Anyone know of a supplier that makes replacement exhaust pipe sections to do away with the middle box and a cost or should I just fabricate one up using the ends of the duff centre section I already have
Seems a lot of hassle if someone makes them at a reasonable price

Mike...

I dont suppose you could PM me a bit of info on tuning up my 200tdi?

I have fiddled a bit with the fuel screw on the back of the pump and ive turned the Full load delivery thing round as the instructions that came with my intercooler said too... i was also adjusted the wastegate on my turbo a bit, but, although it pulled better it doesnt seem to pull that well! If i was in the UK i would see if i could pop up.. but not to worry!

Downloaded this a long while ago and wont garantee anything... usual disclaimer :) but here goes...

"as the gods who run this site have deleted the main information from the arcive in the new website  version I have re typed it ...at 2600 viewings it must be worth keeping!

First you need  16 psi boost on the inlet manifold. to get this you shorten the rod to the waste gate about 6mm its easy on a 200 but a pig on the 300. Loosen the lock nut first and dont loose the circlip! Manufacturers max is 20 psi so 16 is OK

Second remove the 4 screws from the power valve cover ( thats the squarish cover on top of the pump) and with the screws removed see how far the cover rises on the spring. Remove the cover and the diaphragm below...mark its positon if you like ..you lift the edges and pull upwards . Do not touch the accelerator whilst this part is out. Below the diaphragm you will see a knurled wheel .Rotate this down wards so that when the spring and diagphragm are re fitted you have about 2mm lift in the power valve cover plate as it sits on the spring ( on one I had to grind some off the bottom edge of the knurled ring ) Now examing the end of the rod fitted to the diaphragm...it has a cone shape on the bottom offset. re fit the diaphragm so that the deepest part of the cone is to the front of the pump. Re fit the top and off you go.  I have done dozens of these and had no problems..dont fiddle with other screws as all you will get is smoke . This causes a fantastic improvement in autos ..they leave the line when you hit the pedal not 5 seconds later.....mot emmissions are not affected and some say fuel econemy is improved......

You need to do both the turbo pressue and the pump or you wont have the air to burn the extra fuel and you will get smoke....post below gives photos .."

May help...

Cheers Steve
