Someone mention my name?   8)

The footage used was taken from 3 cameras.   A Sony camcorder in the centre.  The mount was basically a large bit of aluminium bar which i shaped and bolted to the dash and then bolted the camcorder onto it.

The roof camera was a plain CCTV colour camera that ran into a VHS video recorder on the inside.  The VCR sat on a plank of wood which was screwed onto the rear of the cubby box and to the where the rear seats would sit on the rasied bit of the floor where the boot floor starts.   I also ran a LCD display from the VCR so I could see the outside footage as i drove along.  The display sat on the front of the cubby box almost horizontal.    Other gadgets in there included CB radios and in-car phone kits, chargers for the cameras etc etc.     The wiring was a hell of a mess but it all worked!

You should be able to see the VCR and TFT screen here:

( image is from original copy of movie which runs at DVD resolution )

Lastly, my co-pilot had a hand held camcorder which recorded to DVD.

As for editing it down.  It took a while.  I basically review most of the footage so i have an idea of what i've taken and how it looks.   I then just think out in my mind and do it bit by bit what music for it to go along with.    Each of the music chosen was for a purpose :

Intro because it had a good intro which led into the titles by mentioning "The party people . . ."

The first song was good as it has the line " I see you, watching me, watching you . . . " which is where i first show the simultaneous inside and outside shots on the first climb up the hill.

3rd song, Sabotage was just because of the name and the damage and scratching from the trees - that was always going to be the woods section.

4th song, Insane in the membrane by Cypress Hill because of the decision to drive back up the river with literally no brakes.

I put a little insert of music for the camera hitting the tree cause of the line " Upsidedown your turning me . . . " and also that the music luckily fitted in perfectly with the timing of the 2 clunks as the roof, then the camera hit the tree.

Once i'd chosen a song, i then just put in the clips and trimmed them to fall in time with the music as best i could.  The more i watch it back now, the more i see i could have done better.  Youtube seems to make the fades happen much faster than the original as i dont remember there being so much black scenes in there.

Editing was done on a mixture of things, but primarily it was all spliced together on a copy of Sony Vegas 6.   It worked well, but sometimes my laptop struggled with only 512mb of RAM and multi-gigabyte video source files.    The most techinical aspect of doing the video was converting the hand external hand held camcorder footage into a usable format.  That took about 3 to 4 convoluted conversion steps to get it into something i could easily work with.

The black RR is no longer with me anymore.  I sold it.  I do miss it a bit.  I'm taking a few years out from that side of things at the moment ( as in play-Land Rovers ) to do other things but i may come back to it another day . . . . for which I have plenty of ideas.

Lastly,   just to add:

The roofrack camera still works!  All the trees did was bend the metal bar it was attached to and cause it was only duct taped onto the bar, the tape gave way rather than busting the camera.

It lives to fight another day !  :P

Thanks for the explaination Don.
Nice, if slightly complicated setup of cameras.
I'm lucky that my camera is a Sony DCR-TRV265E so I get direct DV images that I can download via Firewire into the PC. Someone else was having problems getting clips from a Sony DVD camera and had to record it onto a DVD recorder, transfer onto DVD but he was getting a slow image rate on the PC.  :?
I've done some stuff with Ulead Video Studio 9 which I quite like, but I've yet to have a play at reducing it enough to be able to upload onto Youtube.
They work well on a DVD player and are good quality but I need to bring the resolution down to reduce the file size for upload.

I hadn't thought about using a standard CCTV camera TBH, I like the effect and versitility (SP) of it though. My camera normally just sits on a windscreen mount and, although it's nice and steady, it gets a bit boring after a while!!

I keep meaning to pop in and see you when I'm passing Skelly, but I'm normally strapped for time.  :(
I'll make it one day.

The Sony is has a firewire output and the laptop a firewire input which is sooooo far much better than any other method of transfer.

The Sony unit is also good in that it can do pass-thru, so i could feed it the analogue output from the VCR and then it would translate it into a DV format for easy capture on the laptop.   Worked really well.

A good thing about the roof camera was that i put it on a long metal pole which i clamped to the roof rack with jubilee clips.   This made for being able to easily slide the camera in and out to different distances from the car.   You should be able to see this by the differences in angles between when you first see the car after the 'drumclog' title and when its going through the trees.

As for more videos.  It'll be a while before you get any off roading ones.   The only other one i've done like that is already on youtube for the horses.

That being said, i have a few good ideas for bike/mtb related vids.  Just need  to sort out how to actually film.  There are a few more issues to cover when you have to carry all the camera equipment on the bike !
