Think i made a boo boo

Just fitted a new head gasket to a vit 1.6 8v (1992) and it was a black gasket with some red marks on it. know the gasket is not leeking but the engine is still running too hot and the tappets are noisey. Me thinking the red marks are cutouts to increase the water and oil flow. could anybody confirm this as i need to get it running today

yea had the head done. just thinking the holes in the gasket were smaller than the holes in the block and head.

Me thinking got to change the oil could it be the water in the oil that is making it run hot and have noise tappets as it would make the oil more fuild.

did a oil flush and new oil and filter fitted. but still boiling up. going to reverse flush the water system now. will let you know how i get on

flushed the system through with the hose. then filled the system up with the hose and got loads of air out. So left thermostat out and took it for a good run up some steep hills and it didnt over heat. So it looks like it was the thermostat. So one new thermostat coming up.
