I think its been two years since I was last here. Great to see the Freelander section has grown.
At present on my 3lander I have 225/55/R17 Pirelli Scorpion ST and STR's fitted on Land Rover Vortex alloys. I have ST to the front and spare and STR to the rear. The ST I have I brought on a deal with a LR supplier for £650 for the five alloys with tyres (bargain) I did buy these in April 2004 and have since then done over 50k on the ST's which I am now looking at replacing the front two after I replaced two last year. So there a good quality tyre.
The STR's though are not so good on wear, this may be two things one I brought them cheap and they may have been a factory second, and two the rear diff may be seizing up, (admittedly the wear is all round and not patchy) so its probably the first problem.
I would after having both types of tyre recommend, the ST as the tread pattern, suits me for my driving, I do get off the beaten track a lot, but don't want something that is going to rip the mud apart just something that offers a little extra grip. The STR is defiantly more a motor way high speed tyre, the tread is obvious with two continuous rings round the centre of the tyre.
I would expect to pay somthing like £130 of a ST from the likes of kwik fit, ring round every tyre fitter who stocks Pirelli can get them in if they don't hold them in stock all ready.
One other thing to look at which I was toying with was Colway Tyres originally as an extra MUD set of tyres but they have recently brought out a 225/55/R17 all terain and knowing colway they'll probably cost about £60 each!
