You haven't got a relay tucked in there for trailer wiring have you? That's the area where it all connects to.

i had a similar problem in my old 200tdi
turned out to be one of the relays in either the trailer electrics or the caravn split charge system which was installed
its buried in the panel work behind the dikie seat

it was all unused on my car so i took it out

I have the same ticking noise from the offside light cluster. Have checked the inspection hatch in the boot but the ticking is coming from within the enclosed bit under the rear light cluster. The trailer electrics are located behind the near side lights behind the inspection hatch, so it isn't the trailer electrics.

Anyone discovered what it is yet?

Do you only get the ticking when you are driving along?

Still haven't found an answer to this but have removed the O/S rear light cluster to find a scary mess of wiring as below.

Looking through the light cluster hole you find a mess of wires, a small cylinder with SB2 written on it and a block that looks like it contains a couple of relays.

A closer look at the SD2 item

An even closer look

Closer look at the block with possible relays.

Closer look at the relays which have HFKS 012 SHS & 12VDC written on them.

Does anyone know what these are?.

I've also discovered that the battery is in need of a charge so it will be interesting to see if the ticking noise continues with a fully charged battery.

Did the motor come with 2 trailer sockets, this could be something to do with that if so, some auxiliary wiring/charge circuit

Easiest thing would be unplug the relays and try i then, checking to see if you have knocked out any lights or other systems at the back, dont forget to check rear demister and wiper motor too

Yes looks like the trailer wiring to me.  If the relays go to the grey cable then I'd suggest it's a voltage sensitive relay for the trailer.

I have one in Blue and it keeps switching on and off.  You don't hear it but the caravn lights switch on and off if you leave them on whilst towing.

Well I've charged the battery as it was a bit low and the ticking has stopped?.

I've e-mailed a local Tow Bar fitter in the hope they can get a pos ID on these items. I'll let you know.

The Disco was originally owned by some sort of mobile servicing company so I did wonder if it was some sort of tracking device?

Any tracker fitted in such a sloppy (eeek scotchlocks!) way would be worth avoiding!

I don't seriously think it's a tracker though.

Range Rover Blue - The wires are all part of the standard loom and the 12S cable connects to the box of tricks behind the boot hatch on the Near Side, so it's impossible to see if that's what they connect to.

Had a reply from the Tow Bar fitter who says the small round tube appears to be a rear mounted audible relay which on putting the towed unit onto your vehicle will make an audible buzz + you may get a visual trailer flashing on your dashboard, Secondly the oblong box is a voltage sensing split charge relay which is used in the white socket for charging your caravan battery and running the fridge etc. If the battery was flat on your vehicle then the split charge relay will turn itself on and off as it is checking the vehicles voltage and as such if the battery voltage gets too low then the relay will turn off and back on until the vehicles battery gets to full strength.

All makes sense now, although strange there is a second audible unit as there is already one with the near side kit fitted by Land Rover - hope it helps to answer the original thread.

well that explains things for me
towards the end of 2006 i noticed the caravan battery
was running low and wasnt getting charged up by the car
i thought it might have been a problem in the caravan ,but know ill
look at those relays
probably best just to change the both of them

thanks for the info

  DOH just realised that near side kit is the Parking Distance Control ECU, the audible unit there is for that  :?  So the added unit in the O/S is simply for the trailer - What a plank

finally got round to sorting out the problem
it was the split charge relay that was ticking
not sure if it might have been a bad earth
but have changed relay and earth position aswell
all seems ok now

I notice mine might be playing up too, on modern vans the red wire going live switches the green wire off inside the van to charge the battery, there is no blue wire any more.  Well I left an interiro light on and it kept flashing, so the switch over relay was cysling on and off at random.  Might be the same thing.

the earth wire was on the mud flap bracket
which always rust away
so mines now inside the car where theres less rust
i think
