Power steering

when the engine is off there is very little slack in steering movement
about 1" both ways on the steering wheel

but when the engine is running there is about 4-5" movement

is the box us or does it just want adjusting?

or something else wrong?

You could adjust the steering box so you only have 1/2" each way with the engine off and wheel pointing straight ahead but you don't want to go any further than that.

With the engine running and the power assist working, is it really increasing the movement or does it just feel like it because the wheel is easier to turn?
Just asking because AFAIK there shouldn't be an increase in the movement just because the power assist is on, not unless it's something like the panhard rod bushes your feeling.

as you have to turn the wheel quiet a way before the wheels turn

Ok think i now know what it is

got some one to move steering wheel so i could check underneath

and its the drop arm ball joint thats knackered so will change that and see what happens :D

I changed mine a while back... used a refurb kit rather than change the drop arm (cuz I couldn't get the 'kin thing off!), had difficulty getting the circlip in properly but managed in  the end... or so I thought...

Week later it was driving even sloppier... had a look underneath and the arse had dropped out of the ball joint!  :oops:

Was more careful the second time! :lol:

When we got Blue the muppet previous owner had spun the drag link so that the balljoint was rubbing the housing.  When I rectified this I discovered he had done it to eliminat ethe play in the balljoint rather than replace it before selling the car.
